Dr. Zandri and Sr. Anike had the privilege of taking a trip to the Tankwa Karoo for a very special mission! ๐Ÿฉบ

First up was Toffie, a miniature donkey from Elandskop, who joined his companion Koffie (castrated at WAHG last year) in the gelding club! ๐Ÿซ They also castrated three water buffaloes: Lukas, Petrus and Stoffel. ๐Ÿƒ

But whatโ€™s an adventure without a little drama? ๐Ÿ˜‚ As you can see in the first photo, their journey had barely begun when they found themselves dealing with ๐—ง๐—ช๐—ข ๐—™๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—ง ๐—ง๐—ฌ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—ฆ! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ

And with a little improvisation, our team even set up their very own โ€œ๐—•๐—จ๐—ฆ๐—› ๐—ง๐—›๐—˜๐—”๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—˜โ€! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ˜„

Sharing a story from one of our old blog posts by Dr. Egbert Compion!

Growing up in the Boland, snake encounters are part of life, especially on our beautiful farms and in our mountains. Although some local species, such as the Cape cobra and puff adder, can be dangerous, snakes play an important role in our ecosystem and generally prefer to avoid humans.

They help maintain a healthy balance in nature and deserve our respect.

Dr. Egbert shares a memorable story about a homeowner in Paarl who was worried about a large Cape cobra living in her beautiful indigenous garden. Despite several attempts to locate and safely relocate the snake, it always managed to disappear!

A few weeks later, another urgent call came in. The homeowner had spotted what she believed was a puff adder near her bird feeder. Dr. Egbert rushed out, fully equipped and ready for the rescue. But when he finally arrived, the โ€œdangerous snakeโ€ turned out to beโ€ฆ a big, harmless toad! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿธ

After a good laugh, the toad was safely released into the garden, and the experience became a wonderful opportunity to teach the children about nature and living alongside wildlife.

๐Ÿ’š The lesson? Snakes are an important part of our natural environment and deserve respect rather than fear. If you encounter one, keep your distance, keep children and pets away, and contact a trained snake handler for assistance.

โ˜‘๏ธ Hooves โ€” Check regularly for cracks, soreness or other changes, and keep farrier appointments up to date.
