What a week it has been here at Mortonouro 💛
The past few days have taken us on one of the most emotional, exhausting, beautiful, and humbling journeys we’ve experienced as breeders.
Champagne’s whelping did not go as planned and quickly turned into an emergency situation. After struggling to progress in labour, she underwent an emergency C-section where 8 beautiful puppies were safely delivered — 4 boys and 4 girls 🤭💙💖
Shortly after, we discovered Champagne was suffering from severe anaemia. It has been one of the scariest experiences we’ve faced. She required blood transfusions, specialist care in Johannesburg with Dr de Cramer, and around-the-clock monitoring. There were moments of fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty, but through it all she has shown incredible strength.
While Champagne focused on recovering, we stepped in to bottle feed the puppies full time. Sleepless nights, feeding schedules around the clock, weighing puppies daily, stimulating tiny tummies, and celebrating every gram gained became our new normal. Watching these little babies fight and thrive has been truly incredible.
And then there is Sarabi 💛
With her own litter due very soon, she completely surprised us by stepping in to help care for Champagne’s puppies. Watching her natural maternal instincts take over — gently cleaning the puppies, licking them to stimulate them, and caring for them so softly — has been one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever witnessed. For a maiden girl, she has already shown us what an amazing mother she is going to be.
This week has reminded us that breeding is so much more than cute puppies and happy photos. It is responsibility, heartbreak, dedication, sleepless nights, difficult decisions, and unconditional love for these dogs.
Thankfully, today brings hope. Champagne is improving, the puppies are thriving, and Sarabi is preparing for her own journey into motherhood.
Thank you to everyone who has checked in, prayed, supported us, and followed this journey with us. We appreciate it more than words can say
