Your Medical Aid covers a full WELLNESS CHECK that includes blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar, haemoglobin (iron) and BMI . Knowing the numbers is the first gentle self-help you can give yourself to ensure a healthy life. Steve will do the checks in the clinic and record them onto Discovery Vitality and most participating medical aids, and give advise and referrals where needed.
Because YOU matter!

You know your ID number, your PIN and probably the neighbour's Wi-Fi password... but do you know your blood pressure?

⚠️ High blood pressure is one of the leading risk factors for stroke, and it often has no symptoms at all. Many people feel perfectly healthy and have no idea that their blood pressure is too high. That's why it's so important to know your numbers. The only way to find out is to have your blood pressure measured – and it only takes a few minutes.

As we count down to World Stroke Day on 29 October, we're encouraging everyone in the neighbourhood to get checked. Visit your nearest The Local Choice Pharmacy and ask about a quick blood pressure check, and chat to your pharmacist about what your numbers mean and what to do next. 🫶

How much do you really know about breast cancer? 🤔🎗️ Between the family WhatsApp group and 'something I read somewhere', there are plenty of myths doing the rounds, and some of them stop people from getting checked when they should.

Swipe through to separate the myths from the facts. Did you know that men can get breast cancer too? Or that most people who are diagnosed have no family history of the disease? And while most breast lumps are not cancer, every lump should still be checked by a healthcare professional.

Please share this with the people you care about – you never know who needs to see it today. If you notice any change in your breasts, don't wait. Speak to your doctor or clinic. 🧡

Quick question: when last did you do a breast self-check? 🤔 (No judgement – we know how long the to-do list is.) It takes about five minutes, once a month, and it's one of the simplest ways to get to know your body.

Swipe through for the three steps: look in the mirror for any changes in shape, size or skin, feel the whole breast using the flat pads of your fingers, and remember to check your armpits and up to your collarbone too. Choose a regular time each month – a few days after your period ends is ideal, or the same date every month if you no longer have periods – so that you can learn what's normal for you. 🫶

👉 Remember, a self-check doesn't replace a clinical breast exam or a mammogram. If you notice anything new or unusual, speak to your doctor or clinic sister. Save this post so you have it handy next month!

It's Global Handwashing Day! 👐🧼 Yes, there really is a day for everything – but this one has earned its spot on the calendar.

Washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds is still one of the simplest ways to stop germs from spreading through your home, school and workplace. It sounds small, but it really does make a difference – especially with little ones in the house.

A quick reminder of when it matters most: before eating or preparing food, after using the bathroom, when you get home, and whenever someone in the family is feeling under the weather. Teach the kids to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice while they scrub and they'll get to 20 seconds every time (we can't promise it will be in tune 😉).

👉 Running low on hand wash or sanitiser? Pop in to your nearest The Local Choice Pharmacy! We're here for you. 🫶

🚨 Could you be at risk of a stroke and not know it?

Your blood pressure, heart rhythm and artery health can provide important clues about your stroke risk. In fact, atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm condition, can increase your risk of an ischaemic stroke by up to five times.

👉 For October 2026, for just R75, participating The Local Choice Pharmacies are partnering up with Rossmax to screen for stroke risk. Come in for a stroke assessment today.
