When pets, especially dogs, get bitten by a highly venomous snake like a Puff Adder or a Mozambique Spitting Cobra, there is very little that one can do other than getting the animal to a veterinarian urgently. In cases of severe envenomation, the animal will need antivenom. While those bitten by snakes with neurotoxic venom may have to be intubated and ventilated, antivenom is the only effective treatment. Many pets bitten by highly venomous snakes survive without antivenom purely because they were injected with a little bit of venom, not enough to kill them.

Bites from lesser venomous snakes like Night Adders often kill small dogs and for several of these snakes there is no antivenom. Vets treat the symptoms, manage pain, and protect the airways. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) are not indicted in the short term.

As for first aid and home remedies, there is nothing that you can do for your pet after a snakebite - get it to a vet.

Giving your pet an Allergex tablet, forcing milk down its throat or making it swallow charcoal does no good and if it survives, it is despite such treatment.

Some folks suggest injecting the poor animal with petrol. This is barbaric, causes severe pain and suffering and does not neutralise snake venom. Wonder if they would consider trying it on their children?

Treating a pet with antivenom after a snakebite is expensive - anything from R8,000-R35,000 per treatment. Take out pet insurance. For just over R100 a month your bills are covered.
