🚨 DONKEYS SEIZED UNDER WARRANT 🚨

The Lower South Coast SPCA under warrant, removed seven donkeys from the Nodalane area following a lengthy investigation, numerous warnings, ongoing education, and repeated attempts to work with the owner to improve the Donkeys welfare.

This was not a case where enforcement action was taken lightly. Our Inspectorate spent considerable time engaging with the owner, explaining the legal requirements and welfare needs of working donkeys. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, suffering continued.

The seven donkeys were being used to pull an extremely heavy cart. Even without a load, the cart itself was excessively heavy. The donkeys were then required to pull additional loads of sand, wood, and other materials for long hours, often working from 06h30 in the morning until as late as 18h00 in the evening.

During our Investigation, our Inspectors found:

· Donkeys in poor body condition, malnourished and underweight, and two with severe ear infections.

· Injuries and wounds around the pasterns caused by tethering and hobbling.

· Thick wire being used as bits, causing pain and discomfort.

· Incorrect and poorly fitted harnesses that caused injuries and wounds to the legs, shoulders and backs.

· Evidence that an electrical cable was being used as a whip to force the donkeys to pull heavy loads.

· Donkeys subjected to excessive workloads while suffering from injuries and poor physical health.

· Donkeys being overworked without sufficient rest periods.

The conditions observed by the Lower South Coast SPCA Inspectorate constitutes alleged contraventions of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, including provisions relating to overloading, overworking, beating animals, failing to provide appropriate care and using equipment likely to cause injury or unnecessary suffering.

Working donkeys have served humanity faithfully for thousands of years. They have transported goods, assisted with farming, carried water, and helped communities survive in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Despite their reputation for being ‘’stubborn’’, donkeys are intelligent, sensitive, hardworking animals with excellent memories and strong social bonds.

A donkey is not a machine

A donkey is not a vehicle

A donkey is not a piece of equipment

A donkey is a living, feeling animal capable of experiencing pain, fear, exhaustion and suffering.

The Lower South Coast SPCA recognises that many communities depend on working animals. Our goal is always education and compliance before enforcement.

However, when animals continue to suffer despite repeated intervention, we have a legal and moral obligation to act.

Today, these seven donkeys are safe at the Lower South Coast SPCA, where they are receiving veterinary care, proper nutrition, rest, and the compassion they deserve. Their recovery journey has begun, and while they have endured much, they now can heal.

We thank members of the public who report Animal Cruelty and neglect. Without community support, many animals would continue to suffer unseen.

If you witness cruelty, neglect, overloading, overworking, or abuse of any animal, please report it.

Together, we can ensure that animals are treated with the dignity, care and respect they deserve.

You can help us make a difference in the lives of the Animals in our care.
Monetary donations, fuel sponsorship to keep our Inspectorate on the road to attend cases, paint for the kennels, dry and wet dog and cat food, blankets, hay for the Donkeys, items for our Charity Shop and so much more can help us continue the vital work that we do - the Fight Against Animal Cruelty.

⚠️ DISTEMPER – URGENT WARNING TO ALL DOG OWNERS ⚠️

The Lower South Coast SPCA has recently seen an increase in the number of dogs affected by this deadly and highly contagious disease.

We have received numerous cases of sick dogs — some in the early stages and others already in the final stages of this serious viral disease. Most of these cases have been reported in the Gamalakhe and surrounding areas.

Distemper spreads through the air and can also be transmitted through direct or indirect contact with an infected animal (for example through utensils, bedding, food bowls, or water bowls).

The disease attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and nervous systems. Dogs that are not vaccinated are at particularly high risk of contracting the disease if they come into contact with an infected animal.

❗ We strongly urge all dog owners to ensure that their pets’ vaccinations are up to date ❗

Symptoms of Distemper include:
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Listlessness
⚠️ Tiredness or weakness
⚠️ Vomiting and diarrhoea
⚠️ Discharge from the eyes and nose
⚠️ Coughing
⚠️ Muscle tremors of the body and head

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, please take it to your nearest veterinarian immediately, or contact the SPCA Emergency Line on 083 222 6355 for assistance.

💉 In light of this, the Lower South Coast SPCA will be holding two Vaccination Drives in early June 2026 💉

📌Further notices and dates will be posted on our page.
