CAT CARRIERS NEEDED

Recently, we discovered that some of our older carriers, which we believed to be secure, are not. There have been instances where the doors, fastening clips, or handles have broken or fallen off during transport, putting the cats and kittens at risk. This has been incredibly stressful for our team, as scrambling to catch an escaped cat or kitten is something we never want to experience.

We had lent some of our carriers to recent adopters, but these haven’t been returned yet.

If you have any secure cat carriers that you no longer need or use, we would be incredibly grateful if you could consider donating them to Friends of Ferals. Drop-off points are available in Lonehill or at the shelter.

BACKABUDDY: VET BILLS UPDATE

We have raised almost half of our target on our BackaBuddy Campaign.

We have settled the original R52,000 owing our vets and spent a further R18,500 on veterinary costs for 3 dentals, blood tests, consults, and an investigative surgery for one resident cat. New intake Solomon tested positive for FIV and had a sinus operation and laboratory testing to identify the bacteria of the nasal mucous. He is on a lengthy course of antibiotics but already the boy is breathing so much better.

Other new intakes Miharu was sterilized vaccinated and tested, Katie tested positive for FIV. Jessie was at our vet a third time for stool tests and tested positive for Tritrichomosis which she is on treatment for.

We sadly lost a further 3 resident cats, Hazel was diagnosed with FIP, Tristin’s investigative surgery revealed 2 large masses on her intestines, and FeLV positive Tommy’s lungs became compromised.

The heartache of losing many long time resident cats, and those who were not even with us a year has been devastating. We have lost 18 precious lives in just over 4 months.

This is rescue, this is what we are called upon to do, to ensure that every new compromised life and every one of our residents receive the veterinary and medical attention they need.

FIV MYTH #5: HAVING AN FIV+ CAT IS EXPENSIVE

Fact: Probably the same cost as having a non-infected cat.

Our cats are our furbabies, and proper nutrition and care are important, not just for those cats who have FIV.

FIV+ cats will need a checkup at the vet twice a year, to make sure all is ok and that symptoms haven’t appeared or progressed. You can get immune boosters to help keep symptoms at bay, and as said before, FIV+ cats can go for years without symptoms showing.

Plus with being indoor cats, they are less likely to need vet trips for fighting with the neighbour’s cat, or getting a gash from barbed wire when exploring far from home.

Diet is important, both for nutrition and keeping tabs on weight, as some FIV+ cats tend to be on the chunkier side. Try aim for a good brand of kibble that has 30% protein or higher, and many Vet approved brands of cat food have Indoor Kitty kibble to manage weight. They can still have some wet food, but a raw diet should be avoided for cats with FIV to avoid the risk of food-borne bacterial and parasitic infections.

Keeping active and happy is also important for any cat. Our own immune system takes a toll when we are feeling low, and it’s the same for our feline friends.

Other than maybe some immune boosters, there isn’t much difference between FIV+ and other cats.

STERILISATION AND FRIENDS OF FERALS

At Friends of Ferals, our mission is to care for and protect feral and community cats in a sustainable way. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a core part of what we promote, but we don’t have our own clinic, we have to go to local vets, just like you!

So here’s how you can help:

🐈 Sterilising your pet cat?
Contact your local vet to schedule the procedure. They’re equipped to provide the best care for your furry friend.

🐾 Found a stray cat or feeding a feral in your garden who needs sterilising?
There are a number of organisations and vets who are prepared to offer a discounted rate for sterilisation of feral and stray cats but a booking has to be made in advance, prior to trapping the cat. You are welcome to contact us to find out which is the nearest veterinary clinic near you that offers a discounted sterilisation rate.

It is also not safe for any cat to be trapped and sterilised the same day, as the cat has to fast from 10pm the night before the procedure. Failure to do so could mean that the cat might vomit and breathe food into their lungs while asleep under anesthesia.

⚠️ Important Reminder:
Please do not trap a feral cat and expect us to sterilise it immediately. TNR is a process that requires planning, time, resources, and booking in with vets. If you’ve trapped a feral cat, please contact your local vet as soon as possible, so as not to put undue stress on the cat!

Pearl is a confident, sweet-natured, and loving tuxedo female.

Pearl is very patient, amiable, and interactive with the 10 other cats she lives with in a cabana. She is never the cause of the occasional spat among the cats.

She would do well in a home with another cat, even a semi-feral, handicapped, or special-needs cat. Pearl would be a patient, loving, and accepting companion to another cat and to her human.

Autumn, a beautiful tortoiseshell female came to the shelter in mid-January with her newborn babies.

Despite being just a kitten herself, she proved to be an attentive and loving mother.

Being able to raise her offspring off the streets, in the safety and warmth of the shelter, has helped Autumn blossom into an amazing, playful, trusting, interactive, and loving little girl. Her kittens have found their homes, now it’s her turn!

She has a unique coat colouring, with a clear dividing line from the tip of her nose to the crown of her head, mottled grey on the right and ginger on the left.
