A heartbreaking end to Dukeโ€™s search today. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

We went back out early this morning to continue from exactly where yesterdayโ€™s track ended. Because I had run Shelby on the first search and knew the route, the areas already covered and where we needed to restart, I handled her again for Search Round 2.

After another 2 hours of tracking through the same extremely difficult terrain, we unfortunately located Duke deceased.

He was caught in a snare.

Based on the condition in which we found him, including the absence of obvious rigor mortis at that stage, it appeared that he had passed relatively recently. We cannot give an exact time of death from observation alone, but everything suggested that this happened sometime after our first search ended.

This is absolutely not the outcome we wanted.

Between yesterday and today, Shelby worked approximately 6 hours in total, split across two searches. The terrain made this one of the most physically demanding tracks Shelby has dealt with. Rocky koppies, steep inclines and declines, dense bush, kloofs, fence lines and areas where there is simply no easy way for a person to move through.

Duke also did not travel in a clean, straight line.

His trail zigzagged extensively through the area, which massively increased the amount of ground that needed to be covered. Throughout the search we repeatedly found Dukeโ€™s spoor alongside and around spoor from small antelope in the area, including duiker and steenbok. From the movement pattern we followed, it strongly appeared that he had been moving after game.

That ultimately took him into an area where a snare had been set.

The neighbouring farm workers have now been made aware and the matter will be reported. There are also plans for a group to go through the surrounding area together and actively search for additional snares so that hopefully another animal does not suffer the same fate.

Once Duke was located, we were not going to leave him there.

Getting him home was another challenge entirely. He was a big, heavy boy, and we had to carry him back down the mountain, through the rocky terrain and through the kloof, stopping several times along the way to catch our breath and plan the way down.

But he deserved to go home to his family. ๐Ÿ–ค

As tragic as today was, there is one thing I am grateful for: his family has an answer.

There is no more wondering whether he is still wandering somewhere, injured, trapped or waiting to be found. Sometimes the purpose of a tracking dog is not to give us the ending we desperately want. Sometimes their job is simply to give a family certainty.

And today Shelby did exactly that.

I am incredibly proud of this young dog.

This was by far Shelbyโ€™s biggest operational track since qualifying as a K9 Tracking Working Dog. She has trained incredibly hard to reach this point, and over two days she worked a long, complicated trail through exceptionally challenging terrain without giving up.

Approximately 6 hours of tracking later, she found Duke.

That is a job well done, Shelby girl. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

My deepest condolences go to Dukeโ€™s family. I genuinely wish we could have brought your boy home alive, but I am grateful that we were at least able to bring him home to you.

Rest peacefully, Duke. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ–ค

Another long one for the tracking dogs ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ–ค

Today I stepped in to run Shelby from Voetspoor K9 Tracking Unit SA while assisting on the search for Duke.

Shelby and Anzel qualified under me, and because I also work as Shelbyโ€™s second handler when needed, we are able to support one another operationally and tag-team larger or more demanding searches.

We spent around 4 hours tracking through extremely difficult terrain, including rocky koppies, steep climbs, thick bush, open veld, fence lines and water.

The search area is enormous, and Duke has now been missing for 31 hours and counting. In that amount of time, a dog can cover a substantial amount of ground, especially if stressed, anxious or disorientated.

We picked up spoor and Shelby continued working the area well, but the trail kept circling and repeatedly taking us back toward certain fence lines. With the amount of terrain still left to cover, and Shelby becoming physically tired, I made the call to stop for the day rather than push her beyond the point where fatigue could compromise the quality of her work.

Tracking is not always a straight line from point A to point B. Sometimes it means working huge areas, losing and reacquiring trail, checking crossings, reading the dog, reading the terrain and knowing when to stop.

Shelby worked incredibly hard today and I am very proud of her. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

We will be back out again tomorrow morning at 07:30 to continue the search while conditions are cooler.

Still searching for Duke.
Still following the trail.
Still hopeful. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ–ค A HUGE MILESTONE FOR Clarice K9 Tracking Unit ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

Today I get to announce something I am ridiculously proud of. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Voetspoor K9 Tracking Unit SA โ€” with handler Anzel and K9 Shelby โ€” has officially become the FIRST independently operating tracking unit to complete and qualify through my tracking development programme under Clarice K9 Tracking Unit Academy.

And they did NOT get there by taking shortcuts.

Their development has included structured practical training, scent work, tracking foundations, environmental exposure, handler development, theory, written examinations, practical assessments and finally real-world tracking experience.

Every stage had to be worked through properly before I was prepared to sign them off as ready for operational work.

Shelby has now completed her first real-world, paid missing-pet tracking session โ€” and I could not have asked for a better performance. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Our missing pet was Persephone, a small 1-year-old black female cat who had gone missing from her home after three feral cats moved onto the property and began causing conflict.

Using Persephoneโ€™s personal bedding as the scent article, Shelby worked the property thoroughly before extending her search into the surrounding veld.

She eventually took us to a large fallen tree and decomposing wood structure filled with tunnels, cavities and protected spaces.

This was where her behaviour changed significantly.

She repeatedly returned to the structure, pushed her nose deep into openings and actively attempted to investigate the cavities.

Using my FLIR thermal camera, we found that the lower and internal sections of the structure were retaining a substantial amount of heat โ€” exactly the type of warm, protected environment a frightened cat may choose to hide in.

Shelby also successfully located and indicated on two separate cat stool locations during the search.

And then came the distractions. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Nguni cattle.
Chickens.
Livestock.
Dung.
Wildlife.
Farm activity.

She ignored it ALL.

At one point, an Nguni cow with twins charged us three times, and Shelby remained calm and composed while I dealt with the situation. No bolting. No unnecessary reaction. No losing the job.

She simply carried on working.

For this first operational case, I personally handled Shelby while Anzel observed.

Although Anzel has completed her training alongside Shelby and is ready to work her, I wanted their first live case to be an opportunity for Anzel to watch how I approach a real missing-pet track โ€” how I read the dog, manage the environment, interpret behaviour, assess indications and make decisions as the track develops.

Training scenarios teach the foundations.

Real cases teach you how to put everything together.

And this was an incredible learning experience for both of them. ๐Ÿ–ค

We have also left a cat trap with Persephoneโ€™s family near the area where Shelby showed the strongest positive interest, and they will be using tuna as a strong food attractant over the next couple of days in the hope of bringing her out safely. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

This is exactly what I want to build through Clarice Canine Tracking Units Academy.

Independent K9 tracking teams that are properly prepared before they ever take money from a client or arrive at somebodyโ€™s property claiming to offer a tracking service.

A unit trained through me must demonstrate the knowledge, handling ability, practical skill, environmental stability and tracking competency required before I will consider that team operational.

No rushed qualifications.
No skipping foundational work.
No โ€œgood enoughโ€.

If my name is attached to a tracking unit, I want the public to know that the work behind that team has been taken seriously. ๐Ÿพ

And now I get to proudly say:

๐Ÿ”ฅ VOETSPOOR K9 TRACKING UNIT SA IS OFFICIALLY READY FOR BOOKINGS. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Missing cats and dogs.
Based in Gauteng and available to travel depending on the case.

๐Ÿ“ž Anzel โ€” 071 118 2887
๐Ÿพ VOETSPOOR K9 TRACKING UNIT SA

And if THIS is something you would love to do...

If you want to develop your own tracking K9 and eventually operate your own independent K9 tracking unit, contact me for information regarding my tracking development programme.

From dog development and scent work to handler education, theory, examinations, field work and operational preparation โ€” we build the team from the ground up.

My goal is bigger than training one tracking dog.

It is to build a network of capable, properly prepared K9 tracking teams that can genuinely help families when they need them most. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ

Anzel & Shelby โ€” I am incredibly proud of you.

The training has become the work.

And this is only the beginning. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

๐Ÿพ SOMETHING IS IN THE MAKINGโ€ฆ ๐Ÿพ

Behind the scenes at Clarice K9 Tracking Unit, another tracking journey is taking shape โ€” but this one is being built to stand on its own. ๐Ÿ”Ž๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

Introducing:

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป VOETSPOOR K9 TRACKING UNIT SA ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Voetspoor K9 Tracking Unit SA is currently undergoing its developmental and academic training through the tracking division of Clarice_k9 trainer, with the long-term objective of establishing itself as an independent private K9 tracking unit.

Once ready, Voetspoor K9 Tracking Unit SA will function independently under its own name, identity and operational structure.

While our units will remain completely separate, the goal is to maintain a professional relationship built around mutual support, referrals, continued development and cooperation where appropriate.

An independent unit.

Its own identity.

Its own future.

And at the centre of that journey is Shelby. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Shelby has been putting in an incredible amount of work behind the scenes.

Long before a tracking K9 ever works a genuine missing-person or missing-animal case, there are countless hours spent developing the dog beneath the title.

Shelby has covered kilometres of structured mock tracks and training trails while progressively developing her scenting ability, search endurance, environmental confidence, independent problem-solving and commitment to the track.

Her training has taken her through varying terrain, environmental conditions and progressively more challenging scent scenarios designed to build a dog capable of thinking, adapting and continuing to work when conditions are no longer easy.

Her development has included:

๐Ÿ”Ž Tracking foundations
๐Ÿ”Ž Scent discrimination and scent development
๐Ÿ”Ž Environmental exposure
๐Ÿ”Ž Handler-and-K9 communication
๐Ÿ”Ž Search development
๐Ÿ”Ž Independent problem-solving
๐Ÿ”Ž Progressive track complexity
๐Ÿ”Ž Human-scent tracking development
๐Ÿ”Ž Species-specific scent imprinting
๐Ÿ”Ž Operational preparation

Shelby has already completed extensive development on human scent and has now successfully completed her feline scent-imprinting stage. โœ…๐Ÿˆ

Next comes canine scent. ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ”Ž

There is still development ahead before Shelby is considered operationally ready โ€” because our focus has never been on producing a dog as quickly as possible.

Our focus is producing a dog that understands the work.

A tracking K9 must be capable of maintaining concentration, processing scent information, working independently, adapting to environmental changes and remaining committed when a track becomes difficult.

Strong foundations first.

Operational reliability later.

The eventual mission of Voetspoor K9 Tracking Unit SA:

๐Ÿ”Ž Missing pets
๐Ÿ”Ž Missing people
๐Ÿ”Ž Real-world tracking
๐Ÿ”Ž Practical search assistance

For now, both handler and K9 remain students โ€” putting in the kilometres, studying the theory, completing the practical development and building the foundations required for what comes next.

Tempest is officially geared up in her new olive green setup, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’š

Every piece was chosen with purposeโ€”from the custom collar and patches to the Ghost harness and matching bungee lead. Built for long tracking days, demanding environments, and countless adventures still to come.

As Clarice K9 Tracking Unit continues to grow, so does the equipment we trust in the field. Reliability matters when every detail counts.

A massive thank you to War Dog K9 Gear and Pet Bound Co. for the incredible quality and craftsmanship. We can't wait to put this setup through its paces. ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Building handlers, not just training dogs.

This week has been another proud milestone for Clarice K9 Tracking Unit ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Our students aren't simply following a dog through the bushโ€”they're learning the science behind tracking. Every handler completes structured theory modules, conducts independent research, writes formal examinations, and earns their qualifications through knowledge, dedication and practical application.

This isn't about memorising answers.

It's about understanding why a dog behaves the way it does, how scent moves through different environments, how to make sound decisions in the field, and how to continue learning long after the course is complete.

One of the most important skills we're developing is the ability to research. In real deployments, you won't always have someone handing you the answers. A professional handler needs to know how to find reliable information, compare sources, think critically, and apply that knowledge in the field.

This week, our students completed another theory module and examination, continuing to build the knowledge and confidence needed to become competent K9 tracking handlers.

I'm incredibly proud of how far they're already coming. Watching them grow in confidence, challenge themselves, and earn every step of their progress reminds me exactly why I created this program.

This is more than a course.

It's the foundation of a new generation of South African K9 tracking handlers.

โค๏ธ A little sneak peek...

Some of you may have noticed that I've been a little quieter than usual.

For the past few weeks I've been working on one of the biggest projects I've ever taken on... and today, I'm incredibly proud to say...

My very first official book is complete and ready to be sent for printing. ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿพ

The Clarice K9 Tracking Unit SA ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ โ€“ Operational Tracking Manual.

This isn't just another training guide.

It's years of experience.
Thousands of lessons.
Countless mistakes.
Hundreds of hours in the field.
Real operational knowledge built from working dogs, real tracks and real experiences.

But none of it would exist without one dog...

NICKLAUS. โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ

The very first Operational Tracking Dog of Clarice K9 Tracking Unit SA.

Together we covered countless kilometres through mountains, forests, rivers, open fields and places most people will never see.

We searched for missing pets.
We learned to read the wind.
We followed scent where there were no footprints.
We failed.
We adapted.
We succeeded.

Every lesson in this manual carries a piece of him.

If it wasn't for Nicklaus...
There would be no Tracking Unit.

No academy.
No students.
No operational manual.

He laid the foundation for everything we've built today.

โค๏ธ

In memory of Nicklaus
2019โ€“2026
First Operational Tracking Dog of Clarice K9 Tracking Unit SA.
Forever our beloved Boop Boop.

This page will forever remain in every single manual that leaves my academy.

I'm sharing this page because I'm proud of what we've created, but the manual itself will never be released publicly.

It is exclusively available to handlers enrolled in the Clarice K9 Tracking Unit SA Operational Tracking Programme. Every handler receives their own professionally printed copy as part of their journey.

Creating this manual has taken weeks of planning, writing, designing, editing and refining. Every page has been built from the ground up with one goal in mindโ€”to create something that will genuinely educate future operational tracking teams, not just fill pages.

This is one of the biggest achievements of my career, and seeing it finally ready for print honestly doesn't feel real.

I cannot wait to place the very first copies into the hands of my future handlers and their working canines, and begin building the next generation of operational tracking teams together.

Thank you to everyone who's supported this dream from the very beginning.

And thank you, Nicklaus...

This is your legacy. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”ฅ Tempest is clocking in the kilometres! ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿพ

For an 8-month-old pup, I'm incredibly proud of this girl and the foundation we're building together.

Last week Thursday:
๐Ÿ“ Wolwespruit Mountain Bike & Trail Park
๐Ÿฅพ 5km hike
๐Ÿพ On & Off Lead

Sunday:
๐Ÿ“ Die Bosveld
๐Ÿฅพ 10km hike
๐Ÿพ Full On Lead

Today:
๐Ÿ“ Hedianga Farm
๐Ÿฅพ 15km hike
๐Ÿพ Full Off Lead

That's 30km of hiking adventures in less than a week! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

While these hikes may not appear to be tracking sessions, they form a critical part of our long-term development program at Clarice K9 Tracking Unit

Before a dog can become reliable in scent work, they need confidence, environmental stability, body awareness, fitness, endurance, problem-solving skills, neutrality around distractions, and the ability to remain clear-headed in unfamiliar environments.

Every trail presents new challenges:
๐ŸŒฒ Different terrain
๐Ÿ„ Livestock
๐Ÿ• Other dogs
๐Ÿ‘ฅ People
๐ŸŒฟ New scents
๐Ÿ’ง Water crossings
โ›ฐ๏ธ Hills, rocks and obstacles

These adventures teach Tempest to navigate the world calmly and confidently while strengthening the bond between handler and dog.

A tracking dog isn't built only on a scent trail. It's built through hundreds of experiences that shape resilience, confidence, independence, and trust.

She's still just a baby, still learning every day, but watching her mature, make good decisions off lead, and tackle new environments with confidence has been incredibly rewarding.

One step at a time.
One kilometre at a time.
One adventure at a time.

The future of a great tracking dog starts long before the track is ever laid. ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ

โšก๏ธ VELDORA TEMPEST KIMIKO โšก๏ธ

32 Weeks Old โ€ข 7 Months โ€ข 15 Days

Watching Tempest develop as a working canine has been incredible.

She's currently working short cold scent tracks and has successfully been imprinted on cat scent. Over the next few weeks we'll begin transitioning onto dog scent, followed by her first mock operational tracks to evaluate her strengths, weaknesses, and areas needing further development.

For a dog her age, she's doing exceptionally well.

What's even more impressive is that tracking is only one of her jobs. Alongside her scent work foundations, she's also being developed as a Personal Protection Dog, while maintaining a high standard of obedience, engagement, environmental confidence, and public neutrality.

Her on/off switch works beautifully. When it's time to work, she works. When it's time to settle, she settles.

Recently she completed her very first off-lead public restaurant outing and handled it like an absolute professional.

She has many jobs, many expectations placed on her, and yet she approaches every challenge with enthusiasm, determination, and a willingness to learn.

Still just a puppy.
Already proving she's built for the work. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿพ
