Omweg Farm We apply regenerative farming practises in the Hermitage valley of Swellendam, and raise pigs and chickens on pasture.

Who needs drinking water when you can have a mud bath? 🙈 The pigs will help themselves on a beautiful sunny day, pushing the water drum over. 💦 Ultimate pig bliss.🤎

Forecasting rain accurately doesn’t seem to be as easy as one would think. 🌧️ According to the initial forecasts, it would be soaking wet here by now, but instead we’ve only had 7 mm. Just enough for a little refreshment. The mountains clearly got more, though, and the river is flowing nicely.

When a wader enters the pig camp, you know things are getting wet! 💦

We often see Hamerkops around the weir here in the Kliprivier and around our wetland, but seeing one wandering through the pasture is a first.

It’s been a surprisingly wet week after a relatively dry winter. Fantastic for building up our water reserves and, just as importantly, putting some much-needed moisture back into the soil. 🌱

With Braai Day 🇿🇦 around the corner, it’s a good time to stock up! 🔥 To celebrate Spring, we’re offering a box of 18 eggs free with an order of R200 or more. Offer valid till 18 September and while stock lasts.

Currently in our shop:
🍳 Pasture-raised eggs - our hens spend their days foraging in the pasture, rather than being kept in battery cages or systems with the minimum required outdoor access to be called ‘free range’. Their diverse diet translates in the nutrients of the eggs, with higher levels of healthy Omega-3 fats.
🌭 Fresh sausages - Classic Boerewors, Sizzlers & Indonesian. Made with our pasture-raised pork and ready for the braai. Pure meat and spices, no fillers.
🥢🥡 Lap Yuk - Cantonese cured pork belly also referred to as Chinese bacon. Dice or slice thin to add deep sweet-savoury flavour to stir-fried vegetables, leeks, or fried rice. Available sliced thinly or cut to your preferred size.
🫙 Lard – rendered from the fat of our pasture-raised pigs. Lard has a smoke point around 190°C, making it great for frying, searing, and roasting, and it’s neutral in flavour.
🐇 Rabbit hind legs – tender, lean meat from rabbits raised on pasture. A versatile cut that works beautifully slow-cooked, braised or roasted.
🍯 Raw honey - our hives are sheltered by the old oak trees and the bees are active throughout the year, foraging on whatever is flowering around us. Our honey is unfiltered and unheated, to retain all beneficial properties.

Right at the end of the recommended planting season, we put some more trees into the ground. Three Cape Willows (Salix mucronata, South Africa’s only indigenous willow tree) have replaced the Wild Olives that were struggling in the waterlogged areas of our pasture. In just over a week they started flowering, and the bees didn’t take long to find them. 🐝 Hopefully that’s an early sign of how well they’ll settle in here!

The Wild Olives moved to the edges just outside the pasture, where the soil is looser. Over many years, they’ll still contribute with their shade and shelter, as well as a little nibble of leaves for the cattle and goats. 🌱

Happy Spring Day! 🌼 The grass is fresh and green, the fruit trees are bursting into flower, and everyone is making the most of it. The chickens have also sensed the longer days and the egg yield is steadily increasing. Their days are filled with foraging and laying, with one hen giving “pasture-raised” her full stamp of approval. 🥚🌱 Eggs are available online or via Whatsapp, with free delivery in Swellendam.

As we gear up for the new season and start planning production of rookworst and Sizzlers (our Omweg take on a bratwurst-style sausage) we’re also thinking about the best pairings. 🌭

During the cooler winter months, the cabbages have been growing slowly and steadily, resulting in firm, healthy heads. Yesterday we harvested them and started the fermentation process. ✨

While peeling and cutting, this little one appeared. 🐌 We don’t have many slugs in the garden, probably because our chickens forage around the garden every day, so they hardly get a chance to get in. This little one made it, which we’ll take as a sign of a healthy habitat. 🌱

If all goes well, we’ll have two big jars of sauerkraut in a few weeks’ time - just in time for the October Fest gatherings. 🍻 🇩🇪

The Swellendam Boxing Gym is about so much more than punching bags, skipping and shadow boxing. 🥊

It’s about building strength, fitness and confidence, and over the years it has created a wonderful community in Swellendam where everyone is welcome and supported.

Coaches Dewald and Jan took on the 53 km Whale of Trail challenge, not just for the challenge itself, but also to help raise funds for the gym. Thanks to the sponsors, the funds raised will help grow the facilities, cover membership fees for those whose budgets don’t stretch that far, and keep the lights on. 🌟

The 5am Functional Fitness classes that Jan coaches at the gym have clearly paid off. They’re also building his own strength and fitness, which probably explains the bliss on display in this video about 40 km into the race. 😉

A big thank you to the local sponsors who believe in what the Swellendam Boxing Gym stands for:
Mobility & Alignment
The Woods Swellendam
SWD Verf & Decor
Korf Café
SAS Signs & Stamps
Creative Covering Swellendam
Alpha Engineering
Pro Blast Vapour Blasting
and to all the gym members who donated towards the cause. 🙏

Also a special thank you to Suzani Steyn Physiotherapy for getting Jan back up and running after an injury just 10 days before the race! 💪

It was a perfect day for the race, and both Jan and Dewald thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, the scenery, and the opportunity to take part in such a wonderful event right on our doorstep. 🌊
