On Sunday, from 9-10:30 is our annual Goat Workshop. If you've always wondered about keeping goats in an urban space but weren't sure where to start, come and learn with us. Goats are work, but they're also the most awesome part of our urban farm. They provide milk, manure and joy, and keep our farm systems going!

We're so grateful for them and we'd love to share our experience with you. You can reserve a space via our website, and if you have any trouble, send me a message.

Big thanks to those of you who have helped us in this next stage of our seed bank!

We are hoping it will allow us to keep improving our skills in growing diverse seeds and veg, and that this will ripple out. Right now the seeds are used for starting our seedlings, which we then sell as affordably as we can. Veg seedlings tend to be pretty homogenous, because it's hard to get bulk heirlooms. So we're trying various experiments to have small numbers of unusual seeds.

If you have seeds you are not confident growing just yet, consider donating them to the seed bank.

Please help us spread the word so we can grow our skills collectively, and grow our knowledge of seed and genetics, and vegetables more generally.

Have you noticed how a lot of information about small-scale farming just doesn't apply to your climate? I remember when we were starting our food forest, all that information really derailed me!

A food forest is thought of as a space mimicking forest processes and structures, focused on food production. In permaculture, it will often have many layers of food producing plants and trees in one space.

Yet the quantity of summer water required for certain kinds of food forests is just too much for our dry, windy conditions! Over years of mulching heavily, creating windbreaks, and choosing companion layers that don't require water, we have something resembling a food forest, at least to me!

I've written on our newsletter and blog about food forests in Cape Town, and I'd love to hear your perspective and experiences.

This week in our newsletter I'm so excited to be sharing Natalie-Jane's story. Our paths crosses because of black soldier fly larvae, and I'm so grateful for that!

"My love for growing food and medicine comes from my grandmothers, who always had something growing, whether it was to feed the family or to care for someone's health. Those early lessons planted a seed that has shaped my life."

"Today I live in Mitchell's Plain, where I founded the Brother Nathan Foundation in 2024 in honour of my late father after he passed away. Through the foundation, I work to promote food security, regenerative agriculture, indigenous knowledge, beekeeping and circular economy solutions that empower communities to become more self-reliant."

I'd love for you to spread the word and share our newsletter with someone you think might enjoy it.

Water floats downstream because that is how water works. It is extraordinarily hard to truly realize and have sufficient faith to accept that if you stop having views, having models, planning, desiring, organizing, and structuring, it will all be alright. — Ram Dass

It's that time of year where everything gets super crazy for a while. 20 goats is a lot, and there's ducklings and chicks and and and. And it will all be alright.

Veg growing workshop this weekend...

I'm not under any illusions that I can grow vegetables better than anyone, but I guess the point is that we grow a lot of vegetables, and if you can do something a lot, then, well, you get better, and things start to work out ok even when you kill some vegetables, or grow emaciated and sad versions. It's ok! You can just keep on growing.

You can reserve a spot via our shop website.
