The weather was rough the past week but we found our first specimen of Helictotrichon turgidulum, the small oat grass in Molteno. It is famous for being green deep into winter. Wandile Kay Khave found a Tetrachne dregei that was fresh in flower, so this famous grass also can extend the growing season.

Exactly 50 years ago, I pushed my arm up a cow's re**um for the first time. Nice and warm when it is 0° in the 40km/h winds of Steynsburg, Suurberg.

Years of incorrect grazing practices have reduced the population of Tetrachne dregei or Stormberg cocksfoot which is the top grass in the Molteno area.
