How often should your pet visit the vet?
If your furry friend seems happy, healthy and full of energy, it can be easy to assume that everything is just fine. But pets are experts at hiding discomfort, and some health concerns may not be obvious until they become more serious?

🩺 Regular veterinary check-ups are about more than vaccinations. They help your vet monitor your pet’s overall health, identify potential concerns early and keep them feeling their best throughout every stage of life.

So, how often should you book a check-up?
🐾 Puppies & kittens: During their first year, frequent visits are essential for vaccinations, deworming, growth monitoring and establishing a healthy foundation. Your vet will guide you through the appropriate schedule.

🐾 Adult pets: Healthy adult dogs and cats generally benefit from a comprehensive wellness examination at least once a year. This allows your vet to assess their teeth, ears, eyes, skin, weight, heart and overall condition, while reviewing vaccinations and parasite prevention.

🐾 Senior pets: As pets get older, their healthcare needs change. Check-ups every six months may be recommended to monitor age-related concerns, including dental disease, arthritis and changes in organ function.

🐾 Pets with ongoing health conditions: Some pets may need more frequent visits, depending on their individual needs and treatment plan.

🔎 What should you look out for between visits?

Changes in appetite, drinking habits, energy levels, behaviour, mobility or bathroom routines can all be signs that something isn't quite right. Don't wait for your pet's next routine check-up if you notice concerning changes. Seek urgent veterinary attention for signs such as difficulty breathing, collapse, suspected poisoning or difficulty passing urine.

Did you know just how fascinating your pet’s eyes really are? From seeing in low light to using their eyes to communicate emotions, there’s so much more to those adorable looks!

Just like us, our pets’ eyes need a little TLC, too! Check their eyes regularly at home and include an eye check during their routine vet visits.
👁️ Check daily: Look for clear, bright eyes without unusual redness, cloudiness or swelling.
💧 Look for discharge: Watch for excessive watering or thick yellow or green discharge.
🐶 Watch their behaviour: Look out for squinting, frequent blinking, rubbing their face or sensitivity to light.
🔍 Compare both eyes: Notice any sudden differences in pupil size, colour or appearance.
🧼 Keep the area clean: Gently wipe away minor discharge around the eyes with a clean, damp cloth, avoiding direct contact with the eyeball.
🩺 Schedule regular vet check-ups: Ask your vet to examine your pet’s eyes during routine visits.
🚨 Know the warning signs: Redness, cloudiness, persistent irritation or unusual discharge should be checked by a vet. Sudden vision changes, a painful or closed eye, or a bulging eye require urgent veterinary attention.

Your furry friend’s body is roughly 60-70% water, making proper hydration absolutely critical for their survival. Water drives every single biological process in your pet’s body, from digesting their breakfast to regulating their temperature on hot summer days.

💧 Tips to keep your pet hydrated
- Provide fresh water at all times. Refresh it regularly and wash bowls daily.
- Place several bowls around your home, including shaded outdoor areas. Make sure each pet can drink without another animal blocking access.
- Try a drinking fountain, especially for cats that prefer moving water.
- Add a little water to their usual food, or include an appropriate wet food to increase moisture intake. Cats eating wet food may naturally drink less from their bowl.
- Pack water and a portable bowl for walks, outings and travel, and offer regular drinking breaks.
- Exercise during cooler hours and provide shade and a cool resting area.
- Notice changes in drinking habits. Drinking much more or less than usual can signal an underlying health problem.

🐾 Possible signs of dehydration
- Dry or sticky gums.
- Unusual tiredness, weakness or reduced interest in playing.
- Poor appetite.
- Thick, stringy saliva.
- Urinating less than usual, or darker urine.
- Sunken-looking eyes, particularly with more severe dehydration.
- Skin that returns slowly after being gently lifted over the shoulders. (This check is less reliable in older, very thin or loose-skinned pets)

Contact your vet if you suspect dehydration, particularly with vomiting, diarrhoea or refusal to drink. Collapse, confusion, breathing difficulty or suspected heatstroke require immediate veterinary attention. Offer water if your pet is alert and able to swallow, but don’t force them to drink.

Pet myths: How many have you heard?

From cats landing on their feet to dogs seeing only in black and white, some familiar “facts” aren’t quite true! Let’s clear up a few common myths about our furry companions. 👇

MYTH: Hamsters are low-maintenance pets.
FACT: Small pets still have big needs! Hamsters need a spacious, enriching home with bedding for burrowing, hiding places, exercise opportunities and regular care. A tiny cage and a bowl of food simply aren’t enough.

MYTH: Dogs see only in black and white.
Dogs can see colours, although their colour vision differs from ours. They distinguish blues and yellows more easily, while reds and greens are harder to tell apart. That blue toy really can catch their eye! 💙

MYTH: A wagging tail means a happy dog.
FACT: Tail wagging can also signal nervousness or uncertainty. Look at the whole dog—including their posture, ears and facial expression—to understand how they feel. A wagging tail isn’t automatically an invitation to approach.

MYTH: Cats always land on their feet.
FACT: Cats have an impressive ability to turn themselves during a fall, but they don’t always land safely. Even a feet-first landing can cause serious injuries. Secure windows and balconies to help prevent falls.

MYTH: Horses only sleep standing up.
FACT: Horses can doze while standing, but they need to lie down for REM sleep. A safe, comfortable place to rest is an essential part of their care.

Some pet myths might sound silly, but taking them as fact can affect your pet’s wellbeing. 🐾 Before letting an old saying guide their care, check that you have the right advice. If you’re unsure, ask your veterinarian—your furry friend will thank you!

🐾 Protect your pet. Protect your family. Help prevent rabies.

Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the brain and nervous system of animals and humans. It spreads through infected saliva, usually through a bite, but also through scratches or saliva entering broken skin, the eyes or mouth. Once symptoms develop, rabies is almost always fatal—but it is preventable.

💉 Vaccination is your pet’s best protection
Keep both dogs and cats vaccinated, starting at 12 weeks of age, and follow your vet’s recommended booster schedule. If your pet’s vaccinations are overdue or you are unsure of their history, contact us for guidance.

🏡 Reduce opportunities for exposure
Keep pets safely contained, supervise outings and discourage contact with unfamiliar animals or wildlife. Teach children to avoid approaching or handling unknown animals.

🚨 Act immediately after a possible exposure.
If your pet has been bitten or had contact with a potentially rabid animal, call your vet immediately—even if your pet is vaccinated. Avoid contact with the animal’s saliva and phone ahead before bringing them to the clinic.

If a person is bitten or scratched, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek urgent medical care. Do not wait for symptoms.

Is your pet feeling the spring itch?

As spring settles and plants begin flowering, increased exposure to pollen, grasses and other environmental allergens can trigger seasonal allergies in some pets. Other common environmental triggers include dust, dust mites and mold.

Skin irritation and itching are especially common in dogs, so keep an eye out for:
🐾 Excessive scratching, licking or chewing
🐾 Constant paw licking
🐾 Red, irritated or itchy skin
🐾 Itchy or irritated ears
🐾 Face or eye rubbing
🐾 Sneezing or a watery nasal discharge
🐾 Recurring skin or ear problems

The paws, face, ears and tummy are some of the areas commonly affected by environmental allergies. Persistent scratching and licking can also contribute to secondary skin and ear infections.

🧐What can pet parents do?
After walks or outdoor play, gently wipe down your pet’s paws and coat to help remove pollen and other particles they may have picked up.
Keep bedding and their environment clean, stay on top of flea prevention, and pay attention to whether symptoms seem to flare during particular seasons or after certain activities.

❗Most importantly, don’t assume every itch is “just allergies.”
Fleas, infections, food sensitivities and other conditions can cause very similar symptoms. If your pet is persistently itchy, uncomfortable, developing sore skin, losing hair or experiencing recurring ear problems, speak to your veterinarian so the underlying cause can be identified and properly managed.
