KNOW YOUR BREED:

🎀 YORKSHIRE TERRIER
Looks like royalty.
Built for pest control.

People see:
Tiny ponytail
Silky coat
Handbag-sized body

The Yorkie sees:
“WHERE ARE THE RATS?”

These dogs were used for vermin control, exactly the sort of job terriers excell at.

That means the cute little Yorkie comes from dogs selected for traits such as:

Prey/chase behaviour : notice small fast-moving things, pursue them and catch vermin.

Persistence: a terrier that gives up because the rat disappeared behind something isn't terribly useful.

Independent problem-solving: humans couldn't micromanage every movement while the dog was hunting vermin.

Alertness: notice changes in the environment quickly.

Confidence: Can't be scared because rats bite.

High arousal and fast reactions : when something moves, GO.

They aren't supposed to wait for permission to perform.

A Yorkie isn't necessarily being "naughty" when it:
- chases things
- digs
- investigates obsessively
- alerts/barks at noises
- becomes highly excited by movement
- shakes toys
- wants to search underneath furniture
- shows surprising persistence
- makes decisions independently
That is what terriers are supposed to do.

Instead of trying to suppress every terrier behaviour, give the Yorkie legal outlets for it.

- Hide treats around the garden or house.
- Let them search cardboard boxes.
- Use scent games.
- Allow appropriate digging.
- Play chase/search games.
- Use food puzzles.
- GET A FLIRT POLE!

When training we need to tap into what the dog enjoys doing and use that to our advantage. 😉

FURENSICS: DID YOU KNOW? - CAT EDITION

A cat showing you their belly isn't necessarily asking for a belly rub.
When a cat rolls over and exposes that gloriously fluffy tummy, it can be a sign that they feel relaxed and safe around you.

But here's where hoomans misread the evidence…

Trusting you enough to expose the belly ≠ giving you permission to touch it.

That tempting fluffy tummy is a vulnerable area, and some cats will quickly grab, kick or bite when a hand ventures into forbidden territory.
So when your cat shows you their tummy and then attacks your hand after you touch it, they haven't necessarily “changed their mind.”
You may simply have misunderstood the assignment. 😼

Furensics verdict:

You may admire the evidence. Do not tamper with the crime scene. 😄

Understanding behaviour starts with learning what our animals are actually communicating.

We had a wonderful weekend at the Walkerville Agricultural Show. 😃

We met so many wonderful people and their fur-babies! It is so wonderful to see and listen to people caring so deeply for their dogs and cats. THANK YOU for stopping by and for supporting me I really appreciate it.
