Sadie, a 12-year-old Basset Hound, first visited us in October 2025 with a melanoma in her right eye. Unfortunately, the tumour was causing a build-up of pressure within the eye, leading to significant discomfort and pain.

Sadie was referred to the Animal Eye Hospital, where the specialist recommended surgical removal of the affected eye (an enucleation). At the same time, early pressure changes were already being noted in her left eye, which we managed medically with eye drops.

Sadie underwent her first surgery at Sandton Veterinary Clinic—and she did incredibly well for a senior lady! She adapted beautifully to life with one eye. In fact, her uncle affectionately nicknamed her “the pirate,” a title she seemed to wear with pride 😎

At a follow-up visit in February this year, it was confirmed that Sadie’s left eye would also need to be removed. Naturally, her mom was worried—but she also knew just how resilient Sadie was, and that she would have plenty of support at home.

Enter Oliver—Sadie’s 8-year-old Yorkie brother with a big personality. Oliver quickly took on the role of guide dog, helping Sadie navigate her world with confidence.

The good news is that blind dogs often adapt remarkably well. With a stable home environment and a little extra care, they learn to map their surroundings and rely on their other senses. Many, like Sadie, lean on their canine companions for guidance and reassurance.

In March, Sadie underwent her second enucleation. She walked out of the clinic bravely, following her mom’s voice, calm and content to be heading home.

Soon after, we received a photo update: Sadie, sporting her post-op headgear, had transformed from a pirate… into a unicorn! 🦄

Today, Sadie continues to thrive. She remains a lively, happy old girl—proving that even without sight, life can still be full of joy, love, and adventure.

Well done, Sadie—you are truly an inspiration to us all! 💛🐾
