How can an one year old dog be this muscular? This was Dobby more than a year ago!

I've had lots of people comment on how they can see Dobby's ribs. And I get it, ribs normally equals underweight. But this is not always the case.

It can be normal for a fit, healthy, and highly active dog to have slightly visible ribs when exercising or breathing heavily. This is because vigorous activity burns off excess fat, leaving the ribs covered mainly by muscle and skin.

Unfortunately, many people are accustomed to seeing overweight dogs and mistake a healthy, lean physique for being underweight. Dobby is also a much longer, leaner dog, which exaggerates this characteristic.

The mere fact that Dobby has not bitten his tongue before, is a miracle! Dobby's tongue is constantly out of his mouth, and I've had multiple people, and kids, comment on his tongue when we're out in public.

Dogs do not sweat like humans, so they pant with their tongues out to evaporate moisture and cool their bodies down. This is common after exercise or in warm weather. And Dobby gets hot very quickly!

When a dog is completely relaxed, such as during deep sleep or while being petted, their facial muscles loosen, allowing their tongue to slip out. We see this often during Dobby's deep sleep naps. He'll even forgets to put his dry tongue back in his mouth after he wakes up!

A slightly sticking-out tongue can be a sign of happiness, excitement, or a feeling of comfort and security in their environment. We often se3 these silly faces at home!

And yet again, my child has managed to injure himself. How nobody knows.

My fiancé, Karla, first saw signs of this after Dobby finished his first 5km Parkrun last weekend. They mainly walked through the whole Parkrun, as my Karla's mom is currently injured. I did not join. I don't get up that early. Following the Parkrun, Dobby had a drink of water and then wanted to have a little roll in some dried up leaves. Seconds after his roll, he was limping on the left frontlimb. Karla inspected his foot and couldn’t find anything, so she let him walk a few steps. He was still limping. She checked again, and again, nothing. But this time, he walked off 100% okay. We brushed this off as his stepping on something sharp and being a bit extra.

But then, yesterday, following a beach adventure filled with running and swimming, he was limping on the left fronlimb again, following a roll on his bed. Karla suspects that he has strained something in his left frontlimb, so she has treated this accordingly. This isn't a surprise as he's had lax digits since being a puppy, so this predisposes him to injuries like this. Also, I haven't been strengthening and conditioning him like his veterinary physiotherapist (Karla) suggested to.

His left carpus is now taped for some extra support, but Dobby is not happy about it. At first he was walking like a cat on ice, and now he's just sulking about it. It'll come off again on Monday when Karla treats him again.

And just when I think things are starting to slow down, I realise it's only one more month until the wedding!

Dobby will be spesome time with his two cousins while we're at the wedding and honeymooning. I'm sure he'll miss me just as much as I'll miss him. If not more!

But, I must admit, I'm going to enjoy the break. Having a high energy dog breed does not allow you to sit around and do nothing when you get home from work or have an off weekend. No, that is for walks, training and cuddles. And trust me, Dobby is pretty serious about his cuddles!

Dobby always ensuring that he has a blast of a time wherever he goes.

Dobby has been given a job for this weekend. We spent last night being night security at the Reining & Performance Horse Association South Africa (RPHASA) and National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Nationals competition in Saldanha. We'll be patrolling the premises again tonight, protecting horses, people and vehicles throughout the night.

Dobby's in his absolute element, and even has his own tent! He also slept the whole day today.

Wow, I don't even know how long it's been since I've posted something. Turns out having a full-time job, a high-energy dog breed, and a wedding to plan, while working in some time to relax, is not for the faint-hearted.

Don't worry, Dobby has not been neglected. On the contrary, my rest has been neglected.

This weekend has been an unplanned yet much appreciated resting weekend. I managed to somehow aggravate my old disc injury again, so it's been a lot of laying down for me.

I'm so thankful to my fiancé, Karla (who'll be my wife in just over a month), in times like these as she'll happily, without any hesitation, take Dobby out for me. Unfortunately, however, all the flowers are now gone.

No, we have not fallen off the face of the earth. Turns out when you have a job, wedding to plan, and an active dog, you don't have much time for social media.

Social media has never been a priority for me. I barely take any photos myself.

That's why I'm thankful that I have Karla, who takes stunning photos of him. If he cooperates. Sometimes he's too distracted to pose.

This is reason number one why we don't take Dobby to fields with tall grass during snakey days. His nose is always on the ground!

I know what you're thinking. I can't possibly predict when there will be snakes where, but there's a certain trend of behaviors animals tend to follow within a specific area with specific weather patterns. Therefore, we can attempt to predict when they're more likely to be out sunbathing and when they're more likely to be hiding away.

We can't ever keep Dobby 100% protected from things like snakes and scorpions, but we can do our best to set him up in the safest environment possible.

Sometimes, I'm not sure how this dog fits that tongue in his mouth!

Yes, a dog's tongue appears to change size. Particularly when panting to cool down, as the tongue elongates and flattens to create more surface area. Blood flow increases, causing it to engorge.

This change in size and shape is a normal physiological response to regulate body temperature and shouldn't be a concern unless it's accompanied by other symptoms like respiratory distress or difficulty breathing, which could indicate a more serious issue.

I've had so many people make comments about Dobby's large tongue.

Always by dad's side. At least I know it'll be very hard to lose this dog.

Speaking of losing things. My motorcycle keys were missing for four and a half days. And no, I did not have a spare. This was a very stressful few days, as we literally searched EVERYWHERE for them. Even in the strangest places like the fridge!

Luckily, Karla had the idea to join a neighborhood Whatsapp group and ask if anyone picked them up. Someone did! Two houses down from us! The keychain makes it seem like someone drove over it, so it must've fallen out of my pocket when I was greeting Dobby. I'm so thankful to the person who picked them up and put them on the neighbors' wall. It truly made my month!

Of course this idiot manages to hurt himself on one of the only days I get to take him to the beach. Nothing serious, but enough for him to cry like a big baby.

We took him to the beach yesterday, and after about ten minutes of swimming, Dobby came out lame on his right hindlimb. We immediately stopped the swimming and turned around to walk back home. I tried to carry him, but he would just start panicking and crying.

When we got home, we gave him some anti-inflammatory medication and let him rest and dry for a while. He was struggling to find a comfortable position to lay in, but as soon as the pill kicked in, it didn't matter anymore. He was out cold! After a few hours of resting, Karla treated him. Today, he seemed to be back to his old self, but we decided to rest him for one more day. Just to be safe.

I'm so thankful to have Karla in our lives. I don't know what we would've done without her!

Happy from my goofy boy amongst the flowers.

Time is flying by so fast! Last night I realised that it's only 101 days until I got married. This means today it's only 100 days!

To answer the most frequently asked question, is Dobby going to be at the wedding? No. There's many reasons for this, but reason number one is me. I get terrible overprotective and over cautious when Dobby's in a new, unfamiliar environment, so this will prevent me from enjoying myself and taking everything in.
