Your dog's eyes have started looking a bit cloudy and your mind has already jumped to the worst-case scenario. We get it.

The good news: in most senior dogs, that blue-grey haze is something called nuclear sclerosis and it's simply part of ageing. It's not the same as a cataract and in most cases it doesn't affect vision or cause any pain at all.

Sascha Odayar of Oday Vets sat down with veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Lo-An to answer the ten questions pet parents ask most, including how she tells nuclear sclerosis apart from cataracts, at what age it usually shows up and the warning signs that mean it's time to book a proper eye exam.

Puppy biting has to be one of the biggest problems reported by our Pup Club parents.

It can feel intense, especially when those tiny teeth are on your hands, clothes, ankles, or furniture. Sometimes we can also unknowingly make it worse by adding more excitement when our puppy actually needs help settling.

The good news is that puppy biting is normal behaviour, and with the right approach it does get better.

Something as ordinary as a bunch of flowers or a bottle of hair treatment sitting on your bathroom shelf could be fatal to your cat and most owners have no idea.

Cats are uniquely vulnerable to household toxins because they groom themselves constantly. Anything that gets onto their paws, coat or fur can be licked off and ingested. By the time symptoms appear, serious internal damage may already have occurred.

This article covers seven common household toxins that cat owners in South Africa need to know about:

❌ Antifreeze
❌ Lilies
❌ Dog flea treatments containing permethrin
❌ Essential oils
❌ Ibuprofen
❌ Onions and garlic
❌ Minoxidil, the over-the-counter hair loss treatment that very few cat owners know is potentially fatal.

If your cat has been exposed to any of these, the single most important thing you can do is contact your vet immediately. Even if your cat seems fine.

With toxins, waiting for symptoms is one of the most dangerous choices you can make.
