Another fun day talking to a few eager students!

We were invited to Robertson Voorbereiding’s career day to talk about what it means to be a veterinarian.

Thank you to Dr Mari, her trusted partners Gibbs and Ziva, AHT Rianne and practice manager Hanelize for joining for the day.

Dr Mari was joined by AHT Rianné as well as her two popular companions - Ziva and Gibbs.

Thank you SlimKind for having us! It was a great day for all.

Snail bait toxicity

With an increase in snails this season, we are seeing more poisonings. And yes, the bait tastes good to animals!

Snail bait poisons (metaldehyde) is a fast acting, life threatening neurological poison that requires immediate intervention.

Symptoms:
Drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness and uncontrollable muscle tremors. This will lead to continuous seizures and a dangerous increase in body temperature. This can lead to brain and organ damage and eventually death.

There is no antidote. Decontamination and intensive supportive care is given. Seizure control is paramount.

Please keep your pets safe!

As September comes to an end there is one very important subject to touch upon.

September is world su***de prevention month. Within 5 years, 20% of new vets walk away from clinical practice - that is 1 in 5 vets! Some studies show that numbers are up to 4 times the national average su***de rate.

It is rare to find a vet who has not lost a friend/colleague to su***de. Let that sink in. Emotional burn out is becoming the rule, not the exception.

With years of study, no lecturer taught vets how to fall asleep while thinking of that one patient or case. Or how to carry the losses or the pressure of trying to be perfect.

Why are our vets facing this tragedy?
Client aggression and unattainable expectations.
Online or physical harassment.
Compassion fatigue.
Crushing debt.
Chronic stress and physical exhaustion.
Just to name a few.

Vets are only human. Humans with an undeniable love for animals. But we are loosing them faster than we can make them.

Let’s support rather than judge.
Let thankfulness find its way into every consult room.
Let understanding and genuine care be the way we treat our vets.
Because they are trying their very best to safe the one thing we hold so close - our beloved pets. Our family. Now let’s take care of them too.
