🦷 Did You Know? Dogs Have Surprisingly Thin Tooth Enamel

Many people assume dogs have tougher teeth than humans. Surprisingly, their enamel is much thinner.

Why?

🐺 Dogs evolved to grab, tear and swallow food—not grind it like humans. Instead of thick enamel, their teeth rely on strong dentin underneath for support.

This means chewing the wrong items, like bones, antlers or hooves, can increase the risk of painful tooth fractures.

💡 Tip: Dental chews should clean teeth without being too hard.

Meaty Loaf Enrichment Bowl

Turn an ordinary meal into a fun enrichment activity with this simple slow feeder recipe!

You'll need:
🥩 Absolute Holistic Meaty Loaf
🥕 A few steamed carrot cubes
🫐 A handful of blueberries
🥒 A few slices of cucumber
🥜 A spoonful of plain, unsweetened peanut butter (xylitol-free)

How to prepare:
1️⃣ Spread the Meaty Loaf into the grooves of your Outward Hound Fun Feeder.
2️⃣ Add the carrot, blueberries and cucumber into different sections.
3️⃣ Finish with a few small smears of peanut butter for extra motivation.
4️⃣ Serve immediately and let your dog sniff, lick and problem-solve!

Dinner is GONE. 😳

If you've got one of those dogs, how quickly they eat may be worth paying attention to, particularly if your dog is already considered at higher risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), commonly called bloat.

Research has identified fast eating as a possible GDV risk factor, although the evidence is mixed. So we can't say that eating quickly causes bloat or that slowing a dog down will prevent it.

What we can do is look at sensible ways to manage the habitual gulper at mealtimes:
✅ Divide daily food into smaller meals where appropriate.
✅ Try a suitable slow feeder.
✅ Feeding raw? Spread the meal across the feeder instead of serving it in one large mound.
✅ Know your dog's individual GDV risk, particularly if you have a large, deep-chested breed.

💡 Important: A slow feeder is a feeding-management and enrichment tool. It cannot guarantee prevention of GDV.

Over the next few posts, we'll be digging deeper into bloat, including who's most at risk, what the research actually tells us and the warning signs every dog parent should know.

Because when it comes to GDV, good information matters more than feeding myths.
