(308)

Madikwe Game Reserve is home not only to the Big Five of Africa (Lion, Buffalo, Elephant, Rhino and Leopard), but also to a wealth of over 66 mammal species, including the rare African Wild Dog, as well as Cheetah, Eland, Kudu, Giraffe and a range of more than 300 resident and migratory species of birds. Situated on the Botswana border, just three hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria,

Madikwe is one of the largest private game reserves in South Africa. The safari reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, dissected by a ridge of rugged hills and bordered in the south by the Dwarsberg Mountains. The area is dotted with huge rocky outcrops known as inselbergs. Madikwe is one of few game reserves in the world that was proclaimed a wildlife reserve purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land area for such use.

Elegant, majestic, and timeless. 🦒✨
In the wild, luxury takes on a different meaning: it’s found in the silence, the endless spaces, and the privilege of simply being there, at exactly the right moment.
And at Madikwe Hills, we never miss a moment.

During a single afternoon game drive, we were lucky enough to find so many lion cubs from two different prides! 🦁🥰
A special encounter filled with playing, running, cuddles and, of course, a little time dedicated to dinner!
Seeing them so small, curious and full of energy is one of those unforgettable experiences that a safari at Madikwe Hills can give our guests. 🥹🦁

What’s your favourite sundowner drink ?

A tradition during a Safari is to stop and admire the sunset during the afternoon drive. Often over some delicious snacks the lodge has prepared as well as one’s favourite drink. A cold beer, G&T or even a fruit juice hits a little different while watching the sunset over the African bush.

Another incredible sighting in Madikwe of Africas largest Eagle with its prey, a Martial Eagle with a young Guineafowl. It’s not often we get to see these incredible birds of prey in Madikwe but when we do it’s a special occasion. They will often prey on a variety of smaller bird species, monkeys, monitor lizards and even small antelope.

WORLD AFRICAN WILD DOG DAY 🐕🧡
Today, we celebrate the very heart and soul of Madikwe Hills: the African wild dogs.
For us, they are more than one of the incredible species you may encounter here. They are part of who we are.
Their extraordinary bond, their sense of community, their playful spirit and the way they look after one another perfectly embody what makes the wilderness around us so special.
Every encounter with them is a privilege. Every sighting is a reminder of why protecting this incredible ecosystem matters.
Today, we celebrate our wild dogs, their home, and the wild spirit they represent. 🐕🌿💛
Happy World African Wild Dog Day.

Chaos in front of the lodge

During the late afternoon the Wild Dogs were hunting Impala around the waterhole, they managed to single out one which ran straight in between a herd of Elephants. Trying to seek refuge in the water from the dogs. The Elephants were already upset at the presence of the Wild Dogs and when the Impala came too close to the herd, one of the cows chased it down in the water. It’s not often that Elephants will attack other species of herbivores but in this instance they felt threatened and took it out on the Impala.
