🦩🌍 Celebrating International Migratory Bird Day at Pretoria Zoo! 🌍🦩

Today, as part of our 127-year celebration, we marked International Migratory Bird Day by raising awareness about the importance of birds and the need to protect their habitats. 🐦💚

Our team engaged with visitors, sharing fascinating bird facts and highlighting the important role birds play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. From the beautiful flamingos at the Zoo to migratory birds travelling thousands of kilometres, every bird has a role to play in our natural world. 🦩🌿

🌍 Protecting birds starts with protecting their habitats. By conserving natural spaces, reducing pollution and caring for our environment, we can help ensure that birds continue to thrive for generations to come.

🐧💙 FOUR NEW AFRICAN PENGUIN CHICKS BRING HOPE AT PRETORIA ZOO! 💙🐧

Today, 10 October, we celebrate International African Penguin Awareness Day with some wonderful news from the National Zoological Garden — four new African penguin chicks have arrived! 🐣🌊

Our colony of 14 African penguins is welcoming new life as breeding activity resumes. One of the chicks has started venturing out of its nest, while the other three remain tucked away and growing under the care of their parents. We also have another breeding pair with two eggs, bringing even more hope for the colony! 💙

🐧 DID YOU KNOW?
African penguins are flightless seabirds perfectly adapted to life in the ocean. They don't need snow or freezing temperatures to thrive — they are native to the coastal waters of southern Africa!

💔 Despite this hopeful news, African penguins are Critically Endangered. Their wild populations face serious threats, including food shortages caused by competition with commercial fisheries, habitat degradation, pollution and climate change.

🌍 This year's theme, , reminds us that we all have a role to play in protecting this remarkable species.

Even though Pretoria Zoo is far from the coast, our everyday actions matter. By disposing of waste responsibly, reducing single-use plastics and keeping litter out of rivers and stormwater drains, we can help protect the ecosystems that eventually connect to our oceans.
