This is a great example of what we call a neutrophilia in veterinary medicine, seen on a blood smear.
Neutrophilia is an increase in the number of neutrophils in the bloodstream. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell and are one of the body’s first defenders against infection and inflammation.

🔍 What can neutrophilia indicate?
An elevated neutrophil count may suggest:
• Bacterial infections 🦠
• Inflammation or injury 🔥
• Stress or excitement (especially in pets!) 😺🐶
• Steroid medication use 💊
• Sometimes more serious conditions like immune disorders or certain cancers

Did you know the most abundant white blood cell in circulation is the neutrophil! 🩸
They engulf and destroy bacteria through a process called phagocytosis — essentially “eating” germs to protect the body! 🍽️🦠

Tiny patient, tough little spirit 🦊🤍

This little fennec fox came in with a very sore foot. Luckily, no fractures were found — only a toenail that had broken at the base.

Under sedation, Dr. Marius Louw carefully removed the damaged nail, and this brave little lady was soon ready to head home with pain medication, rest, and lots of love from her owner ✨
