The Onderstepoort Animal Blood Bank (OABB) provides quality blood products to our hospital as well as private veterinary clinics. Healthy dogs, cats, cattle, and horses donate blood to help patients in need of life-saving transfusions.
Blood units can be used as whole blood or separated into packed red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma. Blood transfusions are often required for surgical procedures, cases involving tick-borne or blood-borne diseases such as tick bite fever, blood clotting and bleeding disorders, toxicity, snake bites, and severe injuries.
Your dog can be a hero too! To qualify as a blood donor, your dog must be between 1 and 7 years of age, weigh 25 kg or more, have never received a blood transfusion, not be on chronic medication, be fully vaccinated, and not have any diagnosed chronic diseases.
We are committed to making the donation process as positive and stress-free as possible. For every unit of blood donated, owners receive a voucher that can be used for any of their pets at our hospital. Donor dogs also receive free annual blood tests, free vaccinations, and a complimentary health check with every donation.
Owners are welcome to be present during the donation process. To make an appointment or learn more about becoming a donor, please contact Sr Marizelle de Clercq at [email protected].
