🐾 More Cuddles. More Play. More Time Together. 🐾

Nothing should come between you and your pet, especially not ticks and fleas.

Did you know that fleas don't just live on your pet? They also lay eggs that can spread throughout your home and garden, creating a cycle of reinfestation that's difficult to break.

The key to keeping your pet comfortable and your home flea-free is consistent protection.

Whether it's couch cuddles, garden adventures, or family walks, protecting your pet from ticks and fleas means more uninterrupted moments together.

“It’s just itchy ears…”

…until your dog is shaking their head like they’re trying to dislodge their brain. 😅
Itchy ears are one of the most common things our family vets see, and they can mean a lot more than just “a little irritation.”

Common causes include:
🐾 Allergies
🐾 Ear infections
🐾 Moisture after swimming or bathing
🐾 Grass seeds or foreign bodies
🐾 Ear mites
🐾 Underlying skin disease

Signs to watch for:
• Head shaking
• Scratching at the ears
• Redness or swelling
• Bad smell or discharge
• Pain when touched

The tricky part? Ear problems often start small but can become very painful if left untreated.

And please, step away from the cotton buds! They can sometimes push debris deeper and make things worse.

If your pet’s ears seem itchy, sore, smelly, or they’re shaking their head more than usual, it’s worth getting them checked sooner rather than later. 🐶🐱

🐾 Meet Dr Megan Williams 🩺

We’re delighted to welcome Dr Megan Williams to the Valley Farm family vet team.

Dr Megan qualified in 2022 and has a love for working with all small animals, although cats, especially the extra purry ones, have a very special place in her heart.

She’s also always happy to see a Golden Retriever walk through the doors, which many of our clients will understand completely.

Dr Megan is passionate about caring for both pets and their people, and we’re excited for our clients to get to know her as part of the Valley Farm family.

Bookings with Dr Megan Williams can be made online on our website or by calling us on 012 991 3573

Sometimes behaviour problems are not “bad behaviour” at all.

Fear, anxiety, pain, illness, frustration, and stress can all affect the way our pets behave, and understanding the reason behind the behaviour is the first step toward helping them.

At Valley Farm Animal Hospital, Christina, our qualified Animal Behaviourist, works closely with both pets and our veterinary team to provide supportive, reward-based behavioural care.

Christina offers:
🐾 In-home behaviour consultations
🐾 In-practice consultations
🐾 Support for hospitalised patients
🐾 Puppy behavioural guidance
🐾 Anxiety and fear support
🐾 Assistance with behaviour changes linked to medical conditions

By working alongside our vets, we are able to approach behavioural concerns holistically, because sometimes a behavioural change can be a sign that something deeper is going on.

Every pet deserves to feel safe, understood, and supported.

🐾💛 Meet Elowyn!

Elowyn recently popped in with her mom for a Behavioural Happy Visit, because we want the vet to be more than just “the place where strange things happen.”

Happy Visits are short, positive, pressure-free visits where puppies (and pets of any age!) can explore the practice, meet friendly faces, enjoy treats, and learn that being here doesn’t always mean examinations or injections.

For puppies especially, these early experiences can help build confidence and create positive associations that may make future vet visits far less stressful.
Today for Elowyn, it was all about sniffing, exploring, making friends, and discovering that the vet can be a pretty great place too. 🐶✨

Because creating positive experiences starts with the little things.

Want to find out more about Behavioural Happy Visits? Speak to our qualified behaviourist for more information.

🚨 Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) Vaccine – Limited Stock Available at Valley Farm! 🚨

Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD) is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease that affects both domestic and wild rabbits. It can spread through direct contact, contaminated surfaces, food, insects, and even items such as clothing or shoes. Unfortunately, RHD can progress rapidly, and there is currently no cure, vaccination remains the most effective way to protect your rabbit.

Due to a nationwide shortage, only a limited number of veterinary practices have been able to secure vaccine stock. We strongly recommend booking your rabbit’s vaccination as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

To secure a vaccine dose at Valley Farm, booking and payment in advance are required.

Meet Ollie, an 8.5-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog who came to Valley Farm after developing weakness in all four limbs due to problems within his cervical spine (neck). MRI Imaging revealed compression affecting not one, but two levels of his spinal cord. This is due to collapse of the vertebrae, a condition commonly referred to as Wobblers syndrome.

The challenge?
The spinal cord is essentially the body's information highway. Even small amounts of pressure in this area can have a significant impact on movement, strength and coordination.

To help Ollie, specialist surgeon Dr Ross Elliott, assisted by surgical resident Dr Garrick Cathrall, performed a highly advanced cervical spinal procedure called a Cervical Fusion Distraction which involves:

• Removal of diseased disc material causing compression
• Gentle distraction (restoring space between the vertebrae)
• Placement of specialised spinal cages
• Bone grafting to encourage fusion
• Stabilisation using a cervical locking plate system

This type of surgery requires meticulous planning, advanced imaging, and millimetre-level precision. Operating around the spinal cord leaves very little room for error, making specialist training, surgical experience and careful technique essential.

Cases like Ollie’s are also a good reminder that signs such as:
🐾 Weakness in the legs
🐾 A wobbly gait
🐾 Neck pain
🐾 Reluctance to move
🐾 Difficulty standing or walking

…should never simply be dismissed as “getting older.”

We’re proud to be able to support patients through complex cases like these and work alongside highly skilled specialists to give pets every opportunity for a better quality of life.

We’re cheering Ollie on during his recovery journey.

We would like to thank SA Spine for partnering with us in this complex case.
