Ever arrived at a “dog-friendly” park only to realise it’s anything but friendly for YOUR dog?

Maybe it’s too busy. There’s no secure fencing. Or perhaps your reactive dog needs a quieter space where everyone can enjoy their walk without feeling overwhelmed.

That frustration is exactly what inspired South African dog owner Zani Koen to create WozaPaws.

With a little help from her dog, Soda, she developed a website that helps dog owners discover places better suited to their individual needs.

We remember the sunscreen when we head outdoors. But what about our dogs?

Dogs with pale skin, thin coats or exposed areas with little hair can be particularly vulnerable to sunburn. And with warmer days on the way, it's worth remembering that sun-smart habits aren't just for humans.

🐾 A few simple precautions:

☀️ Provide plenty of shade.
☀️ Avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day.
☀️ Pay attention to vulnerable areas such as the nose, ear tips and belly.
☀️ If using sun protection, choose a dog-appropriate product with suitable UV protection and follow the directions.

A little prevention goes a long way.

We often talk about wanting more pet-friendly spaces. More restaurants that welcome dogs. More holiday accommodation where the whole family can stay. More landlords willing to consider tenants with pets.

But there's another side to this conversation.

Are we, as pet owners, doing our part to keep these spaces pet-friendly?

One dog left unattended to bark for hours. One owner who doesn't clean up after their pet. One unpleasant encounter with an uncontrolled dog. Sometimes that's all it takes for a business or property owner to reconsider welcoming pets.

Of course, not every incident is caused by irresponsible ownership. Animals have needs, fears and limitations and even conscientious pet parents can find themselves facing challenges. But how we respond to those challenges matters.

Responsible pet ownership means recognising our pets' needs while also considering the people and spaces around us.

In this week's Pet-Friendly Living conversation with Ilse Fourie of No Fret Vet and Pet, we're looking at the responsibility that comes with the privilege of sharing spaces with our animals.
