Guarded Like Royalty ๐
In 1988, Storm Cat covered his first book of mares for $30,000, a horse breeders largely overlooked. Twenty years later, he was guarded like royalty.
His fee climbed to $500,000, the highest in North America at the time. He was leading sire in 1999 and 2000, and 91 of his yearlings sold for $1 million or more. He sired eight champions and 108 graded stakes winners.
By the time I met him, his legend already preceded him. What struck me most was the security: a tower overlooking his paddock, eyes on him around the clock, as though he were priceless. To breeders, he was. The pride in his gaze, the sense that he knew exactly who he was, made him impossible to look away from.
A moment I'll never forget ๐
