🐰🧼 RABBIT Scent Glands YES, They Have Them! 😂

Something many new rabbit owners don’t realise is that rabbits have scent glands, and those glands can sometimes need a little help from us to stay clean.

Rabbits have scent glands around their ge***al area, and they use the secretions to mark their territory and communicate with other rabbits. Totally normal rabbit behaviour! 🐰

The problem is that the secretions can build up and become thick, waxy and smelly, especially in some rabbits. If they are left to accumulate, they can cause irritation, inflammation and discomfort and in severe cases, the area can become infected. 😬

🧽 So, should you clean them?

Yes, when necessary but gently!

✔️ Check the area regularly, especially if you notice a strong smell or visible buildup.
✔️ If there is waxy/debris buildup, gently clean it away with a damp cotton pad, earbud or soft cloth.
✔️ Never dig or scrape inside the gland.
✔️ Don't use harsh soaps, disinfectants, perfumes or human products on the area.
✔️ Make sure the area is dried properly afterwards.

⚠️ Important: You don't need to aggressively clean scent glands that are naturally clean. This isn't something that needs to be scrubbed every week just because it exists. Some rabbits produce very little secretion, while others produce considerably more.

🚨 If you notice swelling, redness, bleeding, pus, a very foul smell, sores, or your rabbit seems painful, don't try to treat it yourself get your rabbit checked by a rabbit-savvy veterinarian.

And please remember: a little rabbit stink doesn't automatically mean something is wrong. 😂🐰

Sometimes your bunny is simply saying:

"Excuse me, this is MY territory." 💅🐰

Regular grooming and a quick check of the scent glands are just another small part of responsible rabbit care. ❤️

At this point, I’m almost expecting a monthly performance review from you. 😂

You even reported my post about OAT HAY. 🌾

Yes… OAT. HAY. 😂😂

At this point I’m genuinely confused. What exactly was the plan here? Did you see a rabbit eating hay and think, “Absolutely not. This must be stopped immediately.” 🚨🤣

Rabbits literally need hay as a fundamental part of their diet, so I’m now wondering what’s next…

“Breaking news: Hooggenoeg Rabbitry has been caught feeding rabbits… RABBIT FOOD.” 😂

Just a gentle reminder: reporting my page repeatedly because you don’t like what I post does not make my me disappear. It simply gives me another notification to laugh at while I carry on doing exactly what I’ve been doing for years. 🤷‍♀️

If you have a legitimate concern, by all means, use the proper channels. If you simply don't like me, my rabbits, my breeding program, my rules, or the fact that people actually support what I do cause I'm ethical.

Oat hay is very good for rabbits, especially as part of their unlimited hay supply. 🌾🐇

🌾 Why oat hay is good

Excellent fibre: Rabbits need lots of long-stem fibre to keep the gut moving properly and support healthy digestion.

Helps teeth: The chewing action helps wear down continuously growing rabbit teeth.

Good variety: Oat hay is a grass hay, so it can be rotated with other grass hays such as teff, timothy, meadow or ryegrass.

More interesting to eat: Many rabbits particularly enjoy the oat seed heads, which can make hay more appealing to picky eaters.

Generally lower in calcium than lucerne/alfalfa: This makes it a useful everyday hay for adult rabbits.

Good for young rabbits too: It can be offered alongside their normal diet; young rabbits especially benefit from plenty of fibre while growing.

⚠️ One thing to remember

Oat hay can contain whole oat seed heads, so it is somewhat more calorie- and carbohydrate-dense than plain stemmy grass hay. For that reason, I wouldn't use oat hay as the only hay if you're trying to manage weight.

For your rabbits, I'd treat it as one of several grass hays available ad lib, rather than a replacement for all other hay.

And importantly, oat hay is not the same as feeding rabbits oats/grain. The dried grass plant is primarily a fibre source; feeding large amounts of grain is a very different matter.
