Mommy-to-be! How many babies do you see? It is always helpful to have a pregnant dog / cat XRay during the 3rd trimester in order to see the size of the litter and the size of the babies! This helps us to predict the likelihood of problems during the birth!

Ultrasound is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools available to us to diagnose leg injuries in horses, but it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced a LOT to become good at it! Dr Carli and Dr Marleece are attending an ultrasound course this weekend to improve and fine-tune their diagnostic skills !

Don’t neglect your dog’s teeth!
This is what happens when a dog does not have an annual dental! They come in with a mouth full of teeth and they leave with only half their teeth! Bad teeth cause bad breath. Pain while eating. And much worse…
Especially our smaller breeds tend to have really bad teeth. If a tooth is loose it has to come out! Rotten roots and plaque buildup can cause serious health issues! Bacteria can enter the blood stream and cause havoc in the body and can even cause heart disease! During an annual vaccination check-up we will also examine the mouth and discuss if a cleaning is needed or not! During a dental appointment the dog is put under anaesthesia, the healthy teeth are cleaned and the rotten ones are bid farewell.

Ever seen a dog with just one eye? What breed was it??
Pugs and Pekingeses are prone to losing an eye because of the anatomy of the face and their wide eyelids. We recommend an evaluation of the eyes and eyelids during their routine annual visit and discussing with the team what can be done to prevent the loss of an eye in these breeds.

Did you know that competing horses have to have passports??? Yes they do!! This booklet is where their vaccinations are recorded and it states who they belong to… but probably most importantly, it shows their ID… but unlike humans they do not get a photo in their ID/passport… their id has to be drawn in skilfully by a veterinarian to make sure that it meets the strict requirements or SAEF which is the governing body for horse passports! We spent some time at Joy Of Life Appaloosa stud today making ID’s for 27 or their stunning horses! They are on facebook! Go check them out!
