😿 The sad life of Ginger 🐈 😿
This sweet boy was born in a scrapyard in Booysens Jhb.
The only survivor from the litter,
living amongst scrapped cars & crumpled up metal parts or on the sandy ground - no matter the weather 😿
My hubby befriendly this affectionate boy & every time he went there, he took food and then also a bed, blanket, feeders & even a collar.
This past Friday, he found poor Ginger extremely lethargic, not eating & so weak he didn’t even get up to say hello.
Knowing something was wrong, he took him to a nearby vet who assessed him and apart from needing to be lightly sedated to scrub all the grease & oil off his fur (which is toxic), he was found to be in good health & so was also vaccinated & released.
When my hubby went back to fetch him, he didn’t have the heart to take him back to the scrapyard in that condition and so drove all the way back to Potch with him.
My instincts told me something was wrong. This boy was not well.
Next morning I was most concerned and checked him more thoroughly. That’s when I discovered a massive, extremely hard growth on his abdomen.
Even though I already had a busy day planned, I dropped everything & went off to my local vet.
Blood smear to detect diseases, particularly Panleukopenia - clear.
But the physical examination - detecting this massive hard lump and an X-ray to confirm the findings, tell a different story!
This boy had an extremely severe bladder blockage, urinary & kidney infection. His bladder was 4 times the norm. Filled with urine that could not drain that had formed loads of crystals/stones. This was not a recent condition, but a long time build-up. The bladder was so enlarged, it had pushed up onto the intestines, which had pushed up onto his stomach (which was empty) and also onto a kidney. The kidney too was enlarged and struggling to filter/function. This poor boy was in immense pain and could die within 24 to 48 hours.
It took 45 minutes just to managed to get a catheter into the bladder. Half a ‘kidney bowl’ filled with fluid & blood. An IV drip was inserted, antibiotics were given and 3.5 hours later, I took Ginger home.
48 hrs of constant monitoring, care, force feeding and cleaning, as there is no bag attached to collect the fluid draining constantly.
On Sunday I thought I was loosing him. Vitals were bad. Extremely low body/blood temp, freezing cold, tiny pupils, 3rd eyelid visible, projectile vomiting & somewhat comatose.
He was in toxic shock and organs were failing, but thankfully he managed to hold on.
First thing Monday morning I took him back to my local vet and my awesome go to doctor Elize admitted him and took excellent care of him. More IV fluids, antibiotics, pain/inflammation meds, feeding, cleaning him up and keeping him warm.
Yesterday he was so much better. He had a complete turn-around 😸
Hopefully he can come ‘home’ tomorrow 😁
This gentle, affectionate and friendly boy is only 11 months old.
Once he has fully recovered, we will sterilize him and then he will need a loving home to call his own - forever!
Please don’t let this majestic fur-baby know hardship ever again.
Please can some kind & compassionate person give him the home he deserves & dreams of 🙏
