🐱 IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL CAT OWNERS 🐱

For the safety and wellbeing of your cat, we kindly ask that all cats be transported in a secure carrier, pet crate, washing basket with a secure lid, or a closed tog/gym bag specifically designed for pets when visiting our practice.

Cats can become frightened in unfamiliar environments and may unexpectedly jump from their owner's arms. If a cat escapes, they may:

🐾 Run away and become lost
🐾 Hide in difficult-to-reach areas
🐾 Injure themselves or others
🐾 Experience unnecessary stress and anxiety

Using a secure carrier helps keep your cat safe from the moment you leave home until you return.

Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us provide a safer, less stressful experience for all our feline patients. ❤️

🐱 A safe cat is a secure cat! 🐱

⚠️ LEVEL 8 WEATHER WARNING – PORT ELIZABETH (GQEBERHA) & SURROUNDING AREAS ⚠️

The South African Weather Service has issued a severe weather warning for parts of the Eastern Cape, with heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds, and dangerous conditions expected over the next two days. Residents are urged to take precautions and ensure the safety of their families and pets.

🐾 Pet Safety Tips for the Next 48 Hours

✅ Keep pets indoors and sheltered from the rain, wind, and cold.

✅ Ensure dogs and cats have warm, dry bedding away from damp areas.

✅ Bring outdoor pets, puppies, kittens, and elderly animals inside where possible.

✅ Check that kennels are waterproof and elevated to prevent flooding.

✅ Make sure pets have access to clean drinking water and sufficient food in case travel becomes difficult.

✅ Secure gates, fences, and enclosures, as strong winds can cause damage and allow pets to escape.

✅ Keep identification tags and microchip details up to date in case a pet becomes lost.

✅ Avoid walking dogs near flooded roads, rivers, streams, or beaches during severe weather.

✅ Livestock owners should move animals to higher ground and provide shelter from the elements.

🚨 If conditions worsen, stay off flooded roads and avoid unnecessary travel. Floodwaters can rise rapidly and become life-threatening.

💙 A little preparation today can save lives tomorrow. Please check on your pets, neighbours, and vulnerable animals in your community. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay informed.

🐾 Ear Mites in Dogs & Cats – What Every Pet Owner Should Know 👂🔬

This microscope image shows an actual ear mite taken from a pet’s ear canal. Ear mites are a common parasite seen in both dogs and cats and can cause severe irritation if left untreated.

What are ear mites?
The most common ear mite affecting pets is:

🦠 Otodectes cynotis
These tiny parasites live inside the ear canal where they feed on skin debris and wax. They are highly contagious and spread easily between dogs and cats through close contact.

Signs of ear mites in pets:
🐶🐱

Excessive scratching of the ears
Head shaking
Dark brown or black discharge (“coffee grounds” appearance)
Red, inflamed ears
Strong smell from the ears
Sensitivity when touching the ears
Hair loss or wounds around the ears from scratching

If left untreated, ear mites can lead to painful ear infections and long-term ear problems.
How do we treat ear mites?

At our clinic, we commonly use:
Bravecto
NexGard
Revolution

These treatments are effective against ear mites and help eliminate infestations safely.

🩺 Some pets may also require:
Professional ear cleaning
Ear medication for secondary infections
Follow-up examinations

Prevention Tips
✔ Keep pets on regular parasite prevention
✔ Treat all pets in the household if one pet has mites
✔ Clean bedding and sleeping areas regularly
✔ Early treatment prevents severe irritation and infections

If your dog or cat is scratching their ears or shaking their head excessively, it may be more than just dirt — it could be ear mites! 🐾

Update: Now at animal welfare

Update: Not microchipped

Male dog found at Mount Pleasant Spar now. Neutered. He was just treated or neutered by a veterinary practice hence the shaved patch on his leg. Please share so we can find the owner. Thank you to Chloe Cuthbert who waited with him so we could collect him and take him to safety. Will check in the morning if he is microchipped as we just collected him and dropped him at the practice for safe keeping for the night.

Steytlerville Sterilizations

Steririt 13 Mei 2026

Alle hulp word so baie waardeer.
