Did you know that walks exercise a dog's mind just as meaningfully as its body?

Allowing dogs the opportunity to explore engages their natural curiosity, encourages independent decision-making and provides valuable mental stimulation. And here in Port Elizabeth, we are fortunate to have beautiful places for them to do exactly that.

Schoenmakerskop is one of our favourite coastal excursions. With indigenous vegetation, rugged shoreline, winding pathways and magnificent views across the Indian Ocean, this area offers an abundance of natural variety.

For dogs who spend most of their day in familiar surroundings, opportunities to experience new environments is especially rewarding. Introducing appropriate sensory experiences and physical movement helps keep their minds and bodies engaged. With summer approaching, we are looking forward to hours spent discovering the beautiful corners of our natural world, with a enthusiastic companions leading the way.

With magnificent heart-shaped leaves, the Elephant Ear Plant, Alocasia, is one of the most recognisable additions to a tropical garden. Many Elephant Ear varieties have water-repellent surfaces, from natural waxes, causing droplets to gather into rounded beads and roll away. Their broad leaf surface captures sunlight and supports photosynthesis. In suitable conditions, some varieties can produce leaves exceeding a metre in length.

At Château, our appreciation for nature extends to the plants that make a house feel like home. Understanding their individual requirements, recognising changes in their condition and maintaining the environments in which they flourish are all part of the attention we give to the living things entrusted to our care.

Rabbits have scent glands beneath their chin, which they use to deposit chemical signals onto familiar objects, furniture and even their companions. These secretions allow rabbits to leave information about their presence within their surroundings. Rabbits also communicate through subtle ear movements. They can rotate them independently to investigate sounds arriving from different directions.

At Château, we appreciate the importance of recognising each animal's individual behaviours and preferences, allowing their care to remain attentive to the little things that matter.

Jade is completing her Master's in English Literature and has lifelong experience caring for wild and domestic animals. Her confidence and love of reading reflects in her thoughtful and attentive approach to home and pet care.

Her flexible schedule allows her to work from home, and as an introvert she prefers quiet weekends at home, reading, gaming or engaging in photography. She lives on a small holding which is sanctuary to a wide variety of animal species, from dogs and cats to exotic species such as macaws and other parrots, marmoset monkeys, snakes and geckos.

Over the years, she has gained experience in a range of Speciality care, including administering insulin to a blind, diabetic Cocker Spaniel, providing daily medication to an anxious rescue dog, and managing two high-energy Labrador puppies.
