🐾📚 Good luck with your upcoming exams!

From all of us at Smart Service Dog, we wish our dogs preparing for their assessments—and all students across South Africa—the very best for their upcoming exams.

To our SERVICE DOG canine learners: may your tails keep wagging and your training shine! 🐕🦺
To our students: trust your preparation, take a deep breath, and tackle one question at a time. Remember to make time for rest, too. 💛

We’re cheering you all on!

☀️🐾 HEATWAVE WARNING: KEEP YOUR DOG COOL & SAFE

During extreme heat, a missed walk is safer than an overheated dog.

💧 Keep fresh drinking water available.
🏡 Provide cool shade and a well-ventilated resting space.
🐕 Skip walks, strenuous play and outdoor training in extreme heat.
🐾 Avoid hot pavements that can burn paws.
🚗 Never leave your dog in a parked car—even with the windows open.

⚠️ Watch for heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting, weakness, confusion or collapse.

🚨 Suspect heatstroke? Move your dog to a cool area, begin cooling their body with cool water and airflow, and call your vet immediately. Avoid pouring water over their face or covering them with wet towels. Your dog needs urgent veterinary care, even if they seem to improve.

Please share—you could help save a dog’s life. ❤️

𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. 🐾

This month, we’re highlighting the barriers people with disabilities can face when finding and maintaining employment—and the difference supportive, accessible workplaces can make.

At Smart Service Dog, we train guide and assistance dogs to support greater independence in everyday life, including at work. From helping a person navigate their workplace to performing tasks tailored to their disability, these partnerships can build confidence and open doors to new opportunities.

But inclusion takes people, too. Employers, colleagues and communities all have a role in welcoming guide and assistance dog teams and removing barriers to participation.

A person’s disability should never overshadow their skills, ambitions or contribution.

Join us in encouraging workplaces where people with disabilities have the support, respect and opportunities they deserve.

How does a guide dog learn to work with someone who is blind or visually impaired? 🦮

It begins long before the dog wears a guide harness. Puppies first learn to feel comfortable around people, traffic, shops and the everyday sounds of the world. As they mature, they build obedience, focus and the confidence to work calmly in busy places.

During specialist guide dog training, they learn to follow a route, stop at kerbs and steps, navigate around obstacles and find useful places such as doors and crossings. They must also learn to respond safely when a handler’s instruction would put the team in danger.

The final stage brings dog and handler together. They learn each other’s pace, cues and routines until they can work as a confident partnership. Training continues after they go home, with support as their lives and routes change.

A guide dog does more than know the way. Together with their handler, they make more journeys possible.

No journey towards independence should be walked alone. 👣🐾

At Smart Service Dog, we believe independence begins with confidence, skills and the right support. For a person who is blind or visually impaired, that journey may begin with Orientation and Mobility training and a white cane, and for some, progress towards the life-changing partnership of a guide dog.

A guide dog doesn't simply replace a white cane. It becomes part of a carefully developed partnership, helping its handler navigate everyday life with greater confidence, mobility and independence.

Your support helps us train guide dogs and create partnerships that can open up a world of possibilities.

❤️ Support our work. Help us change another life.
