We want to highlight the hard work and dedication shown by our Trainee Inspector and Trainee Field Officer over the past month.

They have spent many hours in the field, travelling to a number of rural areas to carry out proactive work and assist animals in need. Their efforts have focused on education, welfare checks, and providing support where it is often most needed but least accessible.

This kind of work is not always easy. It requires long hours, challenging travel conditions, and a deep commitment to animal welfare. We truly appreciate the passion and perseverance they have shown in making a difference in our communities.

Please donate to the Phalaborwa SPCA to help make these inspections possible and to support ongoing work in the field.

MEET THE TEAM

Today we’d like to introduce Wallace Modika, our Kennel Hand at the SPCA!

What is your favourite part of your job?
For Wallace, the best part of the job is caring for the dogs through cleaning and feeding. He loves the excitement and joy the dogs show when they see him, jumping, wagging their tails, and greeting him with pure happiness. That instant reaction makes all the hard work worth it.

What is your favourite animal and why?
While Wallace loves all the animals, he has a special bond with a K9 Malinois named R***r. R***r’s intelligence and loyal spirit have truly captured his heart.

If you ever wonder what pure joy looks like, just watch Wallace when he walks into the kennels.

Thank you, Wallace, for your dedication, kindness, and the love you show our animals every single day!

On Sunday, 10 May, our Special Projects Unit responded to a report of illegal hunting with dogs in Kraaipan Village. Senior Inspector Kgakgamatso attended alongside officials from the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT).

Three warthogs were hunted down by dogs and then killed using a metal rod. Three dogs used in the hunt were found to be malnourished and badly infested with external parasites. A Ford Ranger bakkie and equipment, including a spade, a net, and the rod were seized.

The suspects face charges under the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962 and the Transvaal Nature Conservation Ordinance 12 of 1983. They appeared before the Atamelang Court on 11 May. The case continues on 17 June 2026.

Illegal hunting with dogs causes real animal suffering, threatens biodiversity, and undermines conservation efforts that communities depend on.

“The NSPCA will keep acting on cases like this”, Senior Inspector Kgakgamatso confirms. “Communities are a critical part of making that possible.”

If you know of illegal hunting activity, report it to your local authorities or contact the NSPCA directly.

Lammie, Ramadiba, and Mopane deserve better. 🐘

Tomorrow, the EMS Foundation takes their plight to court.

This fight has been coming since 2018, when we were on the brink of trying to set Lammie free, after Joburg Zoo introduced two additional elephants. The NSPCA left the Johannesburg Zoo's Animal Ethics Committee when we were shut out of decisions about the elephants' future.

We're standing firmly behind the EMS Foundation as they take this issue to court. We wholeheartedly hope that Lammie, Ramadiba, and Mopane will one day know a life beyond these walls.

To everyone at the EMS Foundation: we're with you. We wish you strength and success, and we trust this will be heard with the seriousness and compassion these three deserve.

MEET THE TEAM

Today we’re introducing Siyathemba Mgewbi, our Trainee Inspector at the SPCA!

What inspired you to work with animals?
“Working with animals is driven by a desire to be a voice for the voiceless and provide hope for the vulnerable.”

Most rewarding rescue or adoption story:

“When I first started my journey as a trainee inspector, I knew the job would be tough. But nothing prepares you for the moment you look into the eyes of animals who have been left behind.

When Cia and Ciara first came into our care, it broke my heart. They were severely underweight. You could see every single one of their ribs, and their spirits were as worn down as their bodies.

But we didn’t give up on them.

Week after week, we dedicated ourselves to their rehabilitation. Through a strict nutrition plan, medical care, and a whole lot of love, we watched them transform. Slowly, the ribs vanished, their strength returned, their coats began to shine, and their true, goofy, loving personalities finally started to show.

Then came the best part of the job.

A wonderful new owner walked through our doors, fell head over heels in love with both of them, and gave them the ultimate gift: a forever home where they will never go hungry again.

Seeing Cia and Ciara healthy, happy, and loved is the exact reason I chose this path. Rescue work isn't easy, but moments like this make every second worth it.”

Thank you, Siya, for your compassion, dedication, and for giving vulnerable animals a second chance at life.

A heartfelt thank you to a very generous donor for their wonderful contribution to the Phalaborwa SPCA!

We recently received a donation of a bar fridge as well as much-needed pet food for the animals in our care. Support like this makes a meaningful difference and helps us continue providing the best possible care to animals in need.

Your kindness and generosity are truly appreciated. Thank you for supporting our mission and helping us make a difference in the lives of vulnerable animals.

Some stories remind us why we never give up.

When Cia and Ciara were first found, they were severely emaciated and desperately needed help. Their future looked uncertain, but the trainee inspector from the Phalaborwa SPCA refused to turn away from them. Through patience, dedication, and compassion, he managed to get them surrendered into our care where their healing journey could finally begin.

Day by day they gained weight, strength, and trust again. What was once two broken dogs became two happy, playful souls full of life.

Today, we are overjoyed to share that Cia and Ciara have been adopted together. They now have the loving home they always deserved.

Stories like this are only possible because of your support. Please consider donating to the Phalaborwa SPCA so we can continue rescuing, rehabilitating, and changing lives for animals who have nowhere else to turn.

Every donation gives another animal a second chance.
