Winter fluff… or a little extra weight?
A fluffy coat can make it harder to see changes in your dog’s shape, which is why veterinarians use body condition as well as body weight to assess whether a dog is at a healthy weight.
Try this simple check at home:
Feel the ribs: You should be able to feel them easily beneath a light layer of fat, without needing to press firmly.
Look from above: There should be a visible waist behind the ribs.
Look from the side: The abdomen should tuck upwards behind the ribcage.
If the ribs are becoming difficult to feel or the waist and abdominal tuck are disappearing, it may be time to speak to your veterinarian about your dog’s weight.
