🐶 Meet Sabre 🐾

When Sabre’s family noticed changes around his eye earlier this year, they trusted their instincts — and that instinct changed everything.

Further investigations revealed a multilobular sarcoma of bone, a rare tumour affecting the bones of the skull. At 12 years old, Sabre faced this diagnosis with the same quiet determination that has defined him his whole life.

A CT scan confirmed the tumour was large but localised and our surgical team was ready! Sabre underwent a left orbitectomy and tumour resection, a complex procedure performed by our surgical oncologist, Dr Brandan Janssens.

He recovered beautifully.
The histopathology results told us everything we hoped to hear: Grade 1 multilobular sarcoma of bone with clean surgical margins. The tumour was removed completely, giving Sabre an excellent long-term prognosis.

Today, Sabre is thriving. Enjoying walks, chasing his ball and soaking up every moment with the family who never gave up on him. He’s adapting remarkably to life with one eye, and honestly? He’s never looked better!

Sabre’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when early intervention, advanced imaging, skilled surgery and a devoted family come together 🙏

We are so proud of you, Sabre ❤️

A microchip may be small, but it can make a world of difference if your pet ever goes missing.

Unlike collars and tags, a microchip provides permanent identification that stays with your pet for life and helps lost pets find their way home.

June is Microchip Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to ensure your pet has this extra layer of protection. 🐾

The patients might steal the spotlight ✨

But behind every patient is a nurse juggling treatments, monitoring anaesthesia, comforting worried owners, assisting specialists and keeping the wheels turning.

🐶 Meet Copper 🐾

This sweet 9-year-old Border Collie cross was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia after her owners first noticed discomfort while walking in early 2024.

Treatment options for hip dysplasia can include Total Hip Replacement (THR), Femoral Head and Neck Resection (FHNR) or Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO). After consultation with our orthopaedic specialist, Dr. Charlie Boucher, Copper was deemed unsuitable for a total hip replacement due to the loss of gluteal muscle attachment, there was insufficient muscular support for hip implants.

Instead, Copper underwent bilateral FHNR surgery, with the left side performed in 2024 and the right side in 2025. Staging the procedures allowed each side adequate time for recovery, physiotherapy and rebuilding muscle mass before proceeding with the second surgery.

Today, Copper is living her best life! 🎾🐕

Pain-free, active and back to enjoying adventures with her sister, Nugget.

🩺 Meet our Internal Medicine Intern, Dr. Cheré Mostert 💙

Dr. Cheré’s veterinary journey began after graduating from the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science in 2019.

She spent time working as a welfare vet before moving into private practice, where her interest in internal medicine truly blossomed. Her passion for medicine, paired with a love for problem-solving, eventually led her to Vetscape, where she is currently completing her Internal Medicine Internship.

When she’s not at work, she loves spending time with her husband and their English Springer Spaniel, Maple.

We’re so happy to have Dr. Cheré as part of the Vetscape team and can’t wait to see her continue to grow in the world of internal medicine!

Meet our new Surgical Resident, Dr. Anke Roux 🩺💙

After already becoming a valued part of the Vetscape team as our GP Procedure Vet, Dr. Anke is officially stepping into her ECVS Surgical Residency era — and we couldn’t be more excited to have her on this journey with us.

Dr. Anke graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2019 and developed a strong passion for small animal surgery while working in busy practice in Cape Town. Her dedication to surgery led her to complete an honours degree in Small Animal Surgery and Clinical Pathology while working full time — a reflection of the commitment and drive she brings to this next chapter.

She’s ready, focused, and fully committed to the road ahead, and we are incredibly proud to welcome her to the surgical team.

Meet our Surgical Intern, Dr. Nabs Govender 🩺

Dr. Nabs graduated from the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Science in 2023, followed by his community service year and a rotational small animal internship at Onderstepoort.

He has now joined Vetscape for his small animal surgical internship, where he’ll be growing his skills and passion for surgery alongside our team.

Outside of the hospital, Nabs enjoys hiking and cooking and has a very specific life goal: one day living on a farm or smallholding where he can have a pet warthog sleeping indoors with his dogs.

We’re so excited to have Dr. Nabs as part of the Vetscape family and can’t wait to see his journey unfold! 💙
