Beyond Words

Not all communication is necessarily verbal & this stallion was muzzling up close using his lips as a form of curiosity, affection & recognition. Horses are majestic sensitive animals keenly aware of their surroundings & trust matters to them. He chose to lean in & form a connection with me without any prompting - no obligation - no performance - just presence. I responded willingly to his voluntary "kisses", soft soulful eyes & an aura of gentleness & equally of great power.

Non-verbal signals: posture, ear position, distance & touch is a kind of "conversation" without words.
An interaction with a horse offers their full attention, no judgment, their steady demeanor & responsiveness in the moment. I pondered how many people are longing for exactly the same things - life has got so busy that many feel unseen, misunderstood & emotionally distant in their relationships with others.

People often remember how they felt with someone more than the words that were said. Are you able to slow down enough to feel someone's angst or pain underneath their words? To make them feel safe in your company? To respond with compassion instead of react? It's our frequency that creates the space for others to feel seen & understood, to feel worthy & loved.

The horse's energy & mine shared a sacred rhythm in this moment, an attunement of nervous systems whereby we were both relaxed & safe in each other's presence. Time slowed down as we remained engaged & responsive to the touch & gentle nudges, the big boy content to stand still whilst others grazed.

This experience carries a lesson to our relationships with people whereby warmth, patience, trust & sincere presence can create strong bonds. Sometimes there is no need for words & vocabulary is secondary - in times like these it's beyond words but rather built on awareness, consistent cues & emotional resonance. A kinship between sentient beings, human & beast.

The moral of the story: trust with a horse is felt, not spoken!

Finally proving what horse people already know... 💔🐴 Horses grieve too.

A new study, “Grief-like distress responses in horses after the death of a conspecific,” shows that when a herd mate passes away, surviving horses often display grief-like behaviors. Researchers observed changes such as:
✨ Increased vocalizations (calling for their friend)

✨ Restlessness or pacing

✨ Reduced appetite

✨ Withdrawal from social interaction

✨ Seeking comfort from humans or other horses
These behaviors suggest that horses don’t just notice a loss — they feel it. Their strong social bonds mean the death of a companion can deeply affect their well-being.

It’s a reminder that when horses lose a friend, they need time, compassion, and support, just like we do.
