Sometimes training looks like this.💚

Sitting on the floor of a hallway, asking for nothing and simply giving a frightened dog the time she needs.

For this little rescue, living in a home is completely new. The leash is scary, the environment is unfamiliar, and trust is something she’s still learning.

So right now, the goal isn’t walking nicely on leash. It’s helping her understand that the person on the other end of it is safe.

No pulling. No forcing. No rushing.

Just patience, choice and lots of small moments like this.

Because before we can teach the dog, sometimes we first have to earn their trust. 🐾

We’re always told, “Get your puppy out! Socialise them early!” 🐾

But socialisation doesn’t mean putting a leash on a brand-new puppy and expecting them to happily walk around a world they’ve never experienced before.

Sometimes they’re just not ready yet.

Dragging them along, pushing them forward or forcing them to “get used to it” can do the complete opposite of what we’re trying to achieve. Instead of building confidence, we can create fear — and that fear can show up later as reactive behaviour.

Start small. Let them look around. Let them sniff. Let them figure things out at their own pace.

There’s plenty of time for walks. First, teach them that the world isn’t such a scary place. 🐶
