This is one of the most common questions we receive.

As veterinary professionals, our responsibility is not only to dispense medication but to ensure that it is safe, appropriate, and in your pet's best interests.

A pet's weight, condition, symptoms, and response to treatment can change over time. Without a proper examination, we cannot accurately assess whether a medication is still suitable or if adjustments are needed.
In addition, veterinary professionals are legally and ethically required to maintain a valid veterinary-patient relationship and comply with medication regulations.

POISONOUS GARDEN MUSHROOMS🍄

Many South African garden mushrooms are highly poisonous to dogs and can be fatal. Because it is almost impossible to reliably tell safe and toxic wild mushrooms apart, you should treat all backyard mushrooms as an emergency and prevent your dog from eating them. These mushrooms mentioned below, commonly occure in the Western Cape region.

Common Symptoms to Watch For :

If your dog ingests a toxic mushroom, symptoms can appear anywhere from 15 minutes to 6 hours later, and sometimes even days later depending on the toxin:

🍄Mild/Gastrointestinal: Excessive drooling, vomiting, and explosive diarrhea.
🍄Neurological: Weakness, disorientation, tremors, and hallucinations.
🍄Severe: Liver and kidney failure, jaundice (yellowing of the eyes/gums), and collapse.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you catch your dog eating a wild mushroom, take action immediately:

🍄Remove the mushrooms: Pull up and safely dispose of any remaining mushrooms in your yard to prevent further ingestion.

🍄Collect a sample: If possible, take photos or save a piece of the chewed mushroom in a paper bag. Identifying the exact species helps the vet administer the correct treatment.

🍄Go to a vet: Do not wait for symptoms to show up. Go straight to your nearest emergency veterinary clinic.
