Mila the miracle dog

Mila, a 3yr old Dachsie came to Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic 3 days after she had puppies. Her owners noticed she didn't want to eat and appeared disorientated. She pushed her head against objects and appeared blind. The treating vet suspected that Mila suffers from portosystemic/ liver shunt โ€” a rare condition some dogs are born with, resulting in abnormal blood supply to the liver.
This condition causes toxins to build up in the blood, affecting the brain and causing sudden blindness, head pressing, aimless wandering and depression. If untreated, it is fatal. Blood tests were done to confirm it, and Mila was treated appropriately by Sterkspruit vets.

Video 1: Day 1 in hospital
Video 2: Day 2 in hospital
Video 3: Day 4 in hospital
Wonderful was the surprise the next day, when Mila responded brilliantly to treatment. She has gone home on lifelong medication and a special liver diet to prevent toxins from building up. If Mila takes her medication regularly and watches what she eats, she should have a happy life for years to come.

We would like to share this beautiful story of a male porcupine and a small town community working together.

On the 22nd of October a good samaritan informed Sterkspruit Veterinary Clinic of a porcupine possibly stuck in a storm water pipe in Kerk Street Lydenburg. At this stage our vets decided to wait until dark to see if the wild animal would move, as they are nocturnal. When the porcupine was seen in the same position on the morning of the 23rd, a rescue mission was formed. With the help of good samaritans and the Thaba Chewu Municipality Sterkspruit Vets were able sedate and safely remove the porcupine from the drain pipe.

The fully grown male porcupine only sustained mild wounds, which were treated by Sterkspruit Vets.

We are happy to inform everyone that he was released this morning at Sterkspruit Nature Reserve.

We would like to thank everyone involved again for this successful rescue and release.
