A dog’s paws are built to move, balance and grip—but nail length plays an important role in how well they can do all three. 🐾

Dogs can have different natural foot shapes, including compact “cat feet”, longer “hare feet” and webbed feet. Whatever their paw shape, healthy nail length helps the toes and pads work as they should.

Nails that are too long can push the toes out of their natural position, alter how the paw meets the ground and affect posture and movement. But cutting nails extremely short is not the goal either. Dogs use their nails for traction—particularly when running or moving over grass, soil and other loose or slippery surfaces.

The ideal length is comfortable, functional and appropriate for the individual dog. Regular maintenance also allows the quick to recede gradually, making it easier to achieve a healthier length without causing pain.

The goal isn’t the shortest nails possible. It’s healthy, functional paws that allow your dog to stand, move and grip confidently.

In breeds with prominent facial furnishings—like Schnauzers—some hairs may curl or grow towards the eye. When hair repeatedly rubs against the eye’s delicate surface, it can cause tearing, irritation and discomfort.

Regular professional grooming can help by:

✓ Keeping the facial coat clear of the eyes
✓ Removing troublesome overgrowth safely
✓ Making the eye area easier to clean and monitor
✓ Helping owners notice changes sooner

However, not every irritating hair is simply part of the coat. Abnormal eyelashes or an eyelid that turns inward can also cause hair to rub against the eye—and these problems cannot be corrected through grooming.

Those beautiful long coats need a little extra care around the eyes. 👀🐶

Long facial hair can trap moisture and debris, irritate the eyes and make developing problems harder to spot. A simple daily routine can help keep your dog comfortable:

✓ Gently wipe around the eyes with a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water
✓ Wipe away from the eye and use a fresh section for each side
✓ Keep the surrounding coat clean and dry
✓ Secure longer hair away from the eyes
✓ Book regular professional trims

Remember to check your dog’s eyes after dusty walks, windy beach visits and adventures in long grass.

Contact your veterinarian promptly if you notice redness, swelling, squinting, cloudiness, thick yellow or green discharge, persistent rubbing or a possible scratch, grass seed or injury. Never use human eye drops or old medication unless instructed by your vet.

✂️ MYTH BUSTED: Shaving didn't ruin your double-coated dog's coat.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in dog grooming.

If a double-coated dog's fur doesn't grow back after being clipped, the clippers usually aren't the cause. In many cases, shaving simply reveals an underlying issue that was already affecting the hair growth cycle.

Possible causes can include:
🐾 Hypothyroidism
🐾 Cushing's disease
🐾 Alopecia X ("coat funk")
🐾 Nutritional deficiencies
🐾 Chronic illness
🐾 Stress

As groomers, we see your dog's coat up close every few weeks. Changes in coat quality, thinning, bald patches or delayed regrowth are often the first signs that something isn't quite right.
