Trophex Taxidermy Professional taxidermy services in South Africa for both the International and Domestic hunter. Trophex is managed and owned by Bertus and Yolanda Steenkamp.

Having been involved in the hunting industry for many years, this family became aware of the lack of good service in the trophy handling sector (taxidermy and dipping for exportation). Trophex originally started with processing raw hunting trophies for export. In the second year of their existence Trophex exported over a 1000 trophies. Trophex started taxidermy and is currently competing with the top Taxidermies in South Africa while being an international competition of note.

"I don't know how to drink brandy without Coke."

Every podcast starts somewhere, and Podcast #19 started with a proper South African welcome. Robert Sizenbach grew up on wh***ey and Coke in West Texas, so brandy and Coke felt like home.

What is your drink around the fire? Tell us in the comments.

Have you heard of the rare African anthill ant?

When Ruben of Shingani Safaris was younger, he and a friend took an axe and a small shovel to the tallest anthill on the farm one late night. What they carved, and the story they told every hunter who drove past it, is part one of this prank.

Part two tomorrow.

Podcast #20 is out today.

Chad and Melissa came back for their second safari with Shingani Safaris and went home with nine animals and a few stories worth telling: an ostrich that charged, the biggest red lechwe Shingani has taken, three days after one white-flank impala, a blue wildebeest with a bow, and both barrels of a .470 on a buffalo.

Which story do you want to hear first? Tell us in the comments.

A 350-yard shot across a crocodile swamp.

Chad is a bowhunter, and the farthest he had ever shot was 250. The red hartebeest stood on the far side of the swamp, with no road in. He put the shot on the shoulder, and then the real work started: Ruben and the trackers had to wade through waist-deep water to go and fetch it.

How that went is a story on its own.

Tracking is not something you pick up on your first trip.

You have to read the tracks. You have to spot the blood, and then know whether it is good blood or bad blood and where on the animal it came from. And while you are on the track, you have to keep lifting your eyes to check what is in front of you.

It takes years of practice, which makes it all the more impressive that young Stefan Fraser of Excellent Safaris can already do it.

If the bush gives you the chance, take it.

Bertus learned it on a rhino hunt two years ago. They found the animal as soon as they got onto the farm, and the outfitter decided to let it go and pick up the tracks later. They never found it again.

Brian Fraser knew that lesson when the buffalo showed up on day one, and he did not hesitate. Robert Sizenbach trusted him: "You tell me to shoot. I'm not looking at horns. You tell me which one."

The buffalo is down, and now the family is on the way.

Robert Sizenbach's wife, her twin sister and two daughters are joining him for a three-day hunt with Excellent Safaris. For his 20-year-old daughter it will be her very first hunt, with impala and zebra on her list. He took her to the range back home so she could get the feel of a bigger r***e before the trip.

A first hunt, in Limpopo, with the whole family there to see it.

One bullet for a steenbok and an eland? The team at Excellent Safaris say yes.

Around the podcast table the talk turns to Barnes bullets in a .308: no lead up front, so they do not break up, and they hold together on the bigger animals. You can shoot a steenbok without ruining it and still take an eland with the same load. Most of the time it passes straight through. On the bigger animals there is often not much blood to follow, but they do not go far.

I asked the team to follow up after sending out a quote. Probably should’ve specified WHEN 😂📞

A day or two later would’ve been fine… but apparently, before the client reaches his car works too!

A little behind-the-scenes humor from the Trophex team.

What’s the fastest follow-up you’ve ever received?

Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino. For Bertus, the buffalo still sits at the top.

Robert Sizenbach agrees, and he has the hunt to back it up: a bull that came out to tell them who was boss. He took a sable last year that was not even on the list, and he rates sable and kudu as two of the most beautiful animals out there. But the buffalo has that dominance about it.
