We are lately seeing a tremendous increase in tick-bite fever cases at the hospital.

Canine Babesia (Bosluiskoors/tick-bite fever)🩸

- Babesia is a protozoa that is carried by ticks and affects the red blood cells of dogs and causes anemia.🐕

- Clinical signs that an affected dog might experience include lethargy, not eating or drinking, fever and anemia(pale mucous membranes)

- This is a very very serious disease to get, because patients sometimes need blood transfusions.🩸

Routes of transmission:
1. Babesia is transmitted to dogs from ticks-many different tick species can carry this protozoa.

Diagnosis:
- Babesia parasite identification on a blood smear done in hospital.

Treatment:💉
- Anti-protozoal medication
- Supportive treatment that includes vitamins, intravenous fluids and sometimes even blood transfusions.

Prevention:✋️✋️
- Keep up to date with your ectoparasitic controls like Bravecto, Simparica, Nexgard etc.

Prognosis:
- Depends on patients immunity and degree of infection.🦠
