Not everyone should be a handler. And that's okay.

Behind every confident dog-and-handler team is a person who has put in work most people never see.

It takes patience. Progress is slow, and some days go backwards. A good handler stays calm when the dog doesn't get it right.
It takes consistency. Dogs read everything: your timing, your body language, your mood.

Being "mostly consistent" isn't enough.
It takes humility. When something goes wrong, the first question is "What did I do?", not "What's wrong with the dog?"

It takes commitment. Training doesn't stop when the shift ends. It's daily, for the whole life of the dog.

It takes honest self-awareness. A great dog in the wrong hands is a wasted dog, and sometimes a dangerous one.

Handling isn't about having a cool dog. It's about being the person your dog can trust and rely on, every day. And if that isn't you, that's not failure. It just means you can still support the work in other ways, with the right trainer and the right dog in the right hands.

Excalibur K9 Detection School of Excellence is looking for a Kennel Hand / Cleaner to join the team.

Behind every detection dog is a kennel that runs right. Early mornings, clean runs, fed and watered dogs, and zero shortcuts. If you take pride in the work nobody sees, we want to hear from you.

Requirements:
✅ South African ID
✅ Valid driver's license
✅ DH 1 minimum
✅ No criminal record

Only 3 people in Africa held this qualification in 2018. I was one of them.

16 years ago, Chelsea walked in as a kennel cleaner.
Today, she's our National Operations Director. 🇿🇦

No shortcuts. No handouts. Just 16 years of showing up, learning and putting in the work.

The muzzle goes grey. The walks get a little slower.

Dogs don't age the way we do. They give us their whole lives in a handful of years, and the least we can do is make the golden ones comfortable.

Signs your dog is entering their senior years:

Slowing down on walks or hesitating on stairs
Grey around the muzzle and eyes
Sleeping more, or sleeping more deeply
Changes in hearing, vision, or appetite.

Old dogs still love to work, play, and be your shadow. They just do it at their own pace. 🧡

The most dangerous animal in South Africa isn't what you think... 👀

It hits snooze 4 times. It eats straight from the fridge at midnight. It says "5 more minutes" and scrolls for an hour.
It's YOU. 😂

But on World Animal Day, we're celebrating the ones who do it better. 🐕
The K9's are up early, focused and dedicated. They work with their whole heart, they ask for nothing but a toy and a "good dog," and they help keep people safe. ❤️

A massive shoutout to Agility Perfect SA for taking on one of our more unusual projects — because apparently putting K9 kennels in an R44 helicopter is just what we do. 🚁🐾🔥

A huge thank you to Richard for designing and building an incredibly lightweight, durable and purpose-built kennel, with the safety of both our K9s and pilot at the absolute forefront.

And it doesn’t stop there. Richard has also converted our vehicle fleet across the country from our old kennel design to a completely new kennel system — designed around what matters most: ventilation, space, durability and K9 safety.

When your dogs are working athletes, their transport shouldn’t be an afterthought. Whether they’re travelling by road or air, their safety comes first.
