Live plants do more than make your aquarium look beautiful! They can help create a healthier, more natural environment for your fish.

Why? They -

Support water quality: Live plants absorb nitrates and use nutrients from the water, helping support a balanced aquarium.

Reduce stress: Plants provide natural hiding spots where fish can feel safe and secure.

Support oxygen levels: During the day, aquatic plants release oxygen through photosynthesis.

Create a natural habitat: Plants encourage natural behaviours, giving your fish places to explore, rest and seek shelter.

Help manage algae: Healthy, growing plants compete with algae for nutrients, helping limit unwanted growth.

And let's be honest, a beautifully planted aquarium adds a whole new level of life and colour to your space!

Ready to add some greenery to your underwater world?

Come visit The Aquarium Centre and explore our range of aquatic plants. Our team is happy to help you find the right plants for your setup.

Sometimes a fish behaving differently doesn't necessarily mean it's sick. Stress can be one of the first signs that something in the aquarium isn't quite right.

But what could be causing the stress?

Possible causes include:

Poor water quality — Ammonia, nitrite or nitrate levels that are too high can quickly cause stress.

Temperature changes — Sudden changes or temperatures outside your fish's preferred range can affect their wellbeing.

Overcrowding — Too many fish competing for space and resources can create ongoing stress.

New tank mates — Introducing new fish can cause territorial behaviour, bullying or disruption to the existing hierarchy.

Changes to the aquarium — Moving décor, adding new equipment, changing the layout or carrying out major maintenance can temporarily unsettle your fish.

Not enough hiding spaces — Fish need places where they can retreat and feel secure.

The important thing is to look for changes in behaviour and investigate the cause rather than immediately assuming your fish is sick.
Regular water testing and knowing what is normal for your fish can make it much easier to spot when something isn't right.

Not sure what's going on with your fish? Pop into The Aquarium Centre and let us help you figure it out.

We know this might be a bit of a read, but if you’re a fish enthusiast, you’ll want to know what the change of season can mean for your aquarium.

Spring is more than warmer days and longer hours of sunlight. Your aquarium is its own little ecosystem, and as the environment around it changes, your fish, plants and water can respond too.

One thing many fishkeepers overlook is temperature. As the room around your aquarium warms up, the water can gradually become warmer too. Keep an eye on your tank temperature and make sure it remains appropriate for the species you keep.

Spring can also mean more natural daylight, which may sound harmless, but increased light can encourage algae growth. If your tank suddenly seems to be getting greener than usual, take a look at how much light it is receiving each day.

It’s also a good time to take a step back and look at your aquarium as a whole.

Are your fish behaving normally?
Are your plants growing well?
Has anything changed in your tank over the past few months?
Is there equipment that could use a little attention?

And perhaps most importantly, spring is a great excuse to slow down and actually enjoy your aquarium.

After all, fishkeeping isn't just about maintaining a tank. It's about creating a healthy little ecosystem that you can enjoy watching every day.

So before you simply give your aquarium a quick clean and move on, take a few minutes to really look at it.

You might be surprised by what you notice.

Need a little help getting your aquarium ready for the season? The Aquarium Centre is always happy to help.
