The story of the miracle pony, Saffron.
Saffron got severe colic that resulted in a prolonged stay in Onderstepoort Vet Clinic. While she was there her poor owners were told she wouldn't make it. But little Saffie is a fighter! She miraculously recovered against all odds and was sent home. She still suffers from laminitis after this and ME Farrier Service is treating her.

Laminitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the tissues (laminae) that bond the hoof wall to the pedal (coffin) bone in the horses hoof. It can affect any horse, of any age or s*x, at any time of the year.

Here you can see the pictures of the hand-made reverse bar shoes that are being used to support her feet as she recovers from laminitis. The reverse bar shoes puts pressure on the point of the coffin bone to prevent the bone from rotating further. Additionally, taking toe down keeps the hoof at the same angle as the coffin bone if any rotation has occurred.

Horseshoeing is an art form...

"A horse who is hot shod will see fewer incidents of white line disease (a bacterial infection that creeps between the hoof wall and sensitive laminae) than one who is cold shod. This is due to the tighter seal and better fit.
In a wet climate hot shoeing helps prevent the hoof wall from becoming water logged, by sealing the surface under the shoe. This is because the hoof is made of hair-like fibers that are seared and sealed in the process of hot fitting."
