P3 Equine Services was recently asked by a veterinary hospital to print a 3D shoe with a heel wedge to assist in the rehabilitation and recovery of a partial deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) laceration in a horse. The horse had sustained the injury and prompt surgical intervention had been undertaken. An important part of the recovery for this horse meant reducing tension on the DDFT in the post-operative period and that is where we, in partnership with 3D HoofCareoof , were able to assist. A custom made 5-degree wedge shoe was printed to fit the horse’s hoof snuggly. Additional 2-degree shoe inserts were printed which allowed the doctors to easily add or remove inserts until the correct wedge angle was achieved. Once the shoe was placed the entire limb was cast to immobilise the limb and allow the tendon the best opportunity to heal.
