🌸🐾 Spring Has Sprung! Keep Your Pets Safe This Season 🐾🌸

As the weather warms up, our pets spend more time outdoors—but spring also brings increased parasite activity and a few seasonal hazards.

Help keep your pet healthy by:

✅ Keeping tick, flea and mosquito prevention up to date
✅ Checking their ears, paws and coat regularly for ticks, fleas and grass seeds
✅ Watching for allergy symptoms such as scratching, paw licking or face rubbing
✅ Keeping pets away from toxic plants, including lilies and cycads
✅ Storing fertilisers, pesticides and garden chemicals safely
✅ Supervising pets around swimming pools and rinsing them after swimming
✅ Providing plenty of fresh water, shade and avoiding exercise during the hottest part of the day
✅ Using only species-specific parasite products—some dog products are toxic to cats

🐾 Stop the Itch! Your Pet Allergy Guide: Allergy 101 🐾

Is your furry friend constantly scratching, licking their paws, or shaking their head? 😥 Just like us, our beloved dogs and cats can suffer from allergies – an overreaction of their immune system to substances in their environment, food, or things they touch. If your pet is always itchy, allergies might be the culprit!

❓ Decoding the Itch: Common Allergy Signs to Watch For
Allergy symptoms can vary, but here are the most frequent signs:

Excessive Itching: Constant scratching, licking, or chewing (paws, flanks, tail base).
Skin Issues: Red, inflamed skin, 'hot spots', recurrent infections, scabs, or hair loss.
Ear Infections: Persistent redness, discharge, or head shaking.
Gastrointestinal Upset: Vomiting, diarrhea, or flatulence (especially with food allergies).
Respiratory Issues: Less common, but some pets might sneeze or have watery eyes.

🔬 The Four Main Types of Pet Allergies
Understanding these helps us diagnose and treat effectively:

🐜 Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD):

What it is: The MOST COMMON allergy! An intense reaction to flea saliva. Just ONE flea bite can cause severe itching for weeks in a sensitive pet.
Look for: Severe itching, scabs, and hair loss around the tail base, groin, and inner thighs. (Even if you only see a few fleas, they can be the cause!)

🌳 Environmental Allergies (Atopic Dermatitis):

What it is: Reactions to airborne allergens like pollen (grass, trees, weeds), dust mites, and mold.
When it occurs: Can be seasonal (pollen) or year-round (dust mites).
Look for: Itching and inflammation, often on paws, face, ears, armpits, and belly.

🍔 Food Allergies / Intolerance:

What it is: Adverse reactions to specific food ingredients (commonly proteins like chicken, beef, dairy).
When it occurs: Non-seasonal, can appear at any age.
Look for: Skin issues (itching) AND gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, diarrhea).

🌿 Contact Allergies:

What it is: Least common. Occurs when skin touches an irritating substance (e.g., certain plants, cleaning products).
Look for: Irritation and itching directly where the skin made contact.

✅ Diagnosing & Managing Your Pet's Allergies
This requires detective work from our vet team!

First Steps: We always rule out other causes like parasites (year-round flea control is paramount for ALL pets! 🛡️), bacterial, or fungal infections.
Food Allergies: Often diagnosed with a strict "elimination diet."
Environmental Allergies: May involve specific allergy testing.
Management: Can include avoidance, medications (like Apoquel/Cytopoint), immunotherapy, special diets, and topical therapies.

Chronic itching can lead to significant discomfort, pain, and secondary infections, severely impacting your pet's quality of life. The sooner we identify the cause, the sooner we can bring them relief!
