As the seasons start to really change, the effects of incoming cold fronts is starting to be felt in the air and in your ponds water temperature.

When caring for a pond during the winter, it's essential to follow specific protocols to ensure the health and safety of the aquatic life within. Monitoring the water temperature is crucial, as it affects the metabolic rate of fish. As temperatures drop, particularly below 10 degrees Celsius, the fish's digestive system slows down significantly. Consequently, it's advisable to cut down on feeding during these colder months. Overfeeding can lead to uneaten food decomposing in the water, which can harm water quality and increase stress on the fish. Ensuring proper aeration and keeping an eye on ice formation are also important, as they maintain oxygen levels and allow harmful gases to escape, thus fostering a healthy environment for your pond's inhabitants during the winter season.

A good tip is to also change from your regular koi food to a wheatgerm based food. Wheatgerm is easier for koi to digest in cooler conditions.

If you need any guidance or help in getting the best food for your aquatic friends please reach out to us either via facebook or whatsapp.
