🐾 WHAT DOES “DOG-FRIENDLY” ACCOMMODATION ACTUALLY MEAN?

We see more and more accommodation options describing themselves as “pet-friendly” or “dog-friendly”, but what do you think should qualify a property to use that description?
We’d love to hear from BOTH sides 👇

🐶 DOG OWNERS: What do you expect when you book somewhere advertised as dog-friendly?
🏡 ACCOMMODATION OWNERS: What do you offer your four-legged guests, and what do you think guests should reasonably expect?

Some things to think about:
🐾 Is a secure, enclosed garden important?
🐾 Should dogs be allowed inside the accommodation?
🐾 Should dogs be allowed on furniture or beds? 🐾 Is access to walking areas important?
🐾 Should there be somewhere safe for dogs to be off-lead?
🐾 Do bowls, beds, treats or p**p bags matter?
🐾 Are restrictions on size, breed or number of dogs reasonable?
🐾 Is charging an additional pet fee fair?
🐾 Does “dogs allowed” automatically mean “dog-friendly”?

Keep your pets indoors 🥶

❄️Snow and icy conditions expected across the country ❄️

📍Across South Africa

South Africa is set to see a sharp drop in temperatures across most of the country early next week, with snow and rain in certain areas.

Heavy snowfall is expected in the Eastern Cape highlands, Lesotho, and the southern Free State, with snow also in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and southern Drakensburg.

How can you keep your animals safe and warm?

🏡Make sure animals have sufficient, warm shelter.
🐄Provide extra bedding to farm animals.
🐕Bring domestic pets like cats and dogs indoors.
💧Make sure animals have access to freshwater that is not iced over.
🐎For outdoors animals, give them waterproof shelter that is raised off the ground and dry bedding.
🐖Provide farm animals with dry feed and keep their shelters free from mud.

If you see an animal chained or left out in the cold, with no access to shelter, please report it to your nearest SPCA, or call us at 011 907 3590.

Severe Weather Warning: Please Keep Your Animals Safe

The South African Weather Service has issued several severe weather warnings across the country for the coming week. Weather conditions can change quickly, and we urge all pet owners to take the necessary precautions to protect their animals.

Please ensure that your animals:

• Have access to secure, dry and weatherproof shelter
• Are not left exposed to heavy rain, strong winds, flooding or extreme cold
• Have enough clean drinking water, food and warm, dry bedding
• Are brought indoors or moved to a safer area where possible
• Wear identification tags and are microchipped in case they become frightened and escape
• Are never chained or confined in an area where they cannot move away from rising water

Check gates, fences, kennels, roofs and drainage areas before the severe weather arrives. Keep medication, pet carriers, leads, blankets and other emergency supplies ready should evacuation become necessary.

Please also keep livestock and other animals away from low-lying areas, rivers, streams and locations that are prone to flooding.

Animals depend entirely on us for their safety. Planning ahead could save a life.

Please stay alert, follow local weather updates and never place yourself or emergency personnel in danger during severe weather.

Ever tried planning a weekend away and spent more time worrying about fencing than actually relaxing? Dogfriendlyjozi knows that feeling too well.

We recently stayed at Highland Giants Estate near Dullstroom, and it's one of those rare places where you can actually switch off. A fully fenced garden wraps around the farmhouse, so the dogs had free rein to zoom, sniff and sunbathe without anyone hovering nearby. Over 300 hectares of farmland, dams and river frontage meant long walks and tired, happy dogs by the end of each day.

It's not a cramped cottage either; three bedrooms, a proper kitchen, an indoor fireplace and braai spots on the stoep make it work well for families or groups travelling with dogs.
