We are the original South African missing pet specialists! First in SA with dogs and handlers who undergo strict and regular training.

We have a team of highly trained handlers with awesome highly trained search K9s Healthy Hound is the original, most successful and most experienced missing pet unit in Africa. We have a team of dogs that are experienced in tracking dogs, cats, wildlife and more! Although based in Gauteng we have traveled to other provinces and have even had a callout to the Karoo as well as a callout to search fo

r a dog on Table Mountain! But, it’s not all about our K9 partners. At Healthy Hound, we have an amazing team who are there to help and guide you from the minute your pet has been found and we will not abandon you until your pet is found. We have been involved with the searching and rescue of some high profile dog and cat searches and have been in local and National news many times. But, it’s not all about the news making searches! Our little team started in August 2020 when K9 Zizou had a career change at 1yr old from anti poaching to missing pet search. From the beginning, she has excelled as a search dog, even in difficult circumstances. Subsequently we have trained up a bunch of other dogs and strive for continuous training for handlers and dogs alike. We do not rely on just one dog and will pick the right dog for the job. And we use other search methods too if they are needed. We like to take a holistic approach to searching. We also do not just search! We also perform rescues (including technical rescue) and do regular work in communities such as our snare walks and other initiatives. We have done some dramatic rescues and some amazing investigations which have resulted in great success. With a success rate that is comfortably over 85% and the fact that we also do rescues, it is the logical choice to contact us when a pet goes missing.

🎉 A Purr-fect Reunion: Welcome Home, Agnes! 🎉

We’re overjoyed to share a truly special “welcome home” story from Fairlands! Agnes, a charming 5-year-old cat, usually enjoys her outdoor excursions but always returns promptly. So, when she didn’t come home as expected, her concerned mom reached out to our team.

Our dedicated tracker, Bandit, immediately got to work, meticulously searching the rather expansive and complex area. Bandit’s incredible tracking skills led him to another complex nearby, characterized by larger homes and gardens, and bordering a dam area. Through careful investigation, we confidently narrowed down Agnes’s potential whereabouts to just three houses, certain she was enjoying some wall-hopping adventures!

Working closely with Agnes’s mom and dad, we devised a personalized lure and a strategic plan. After a few days, Agnes was sighted, much closer to her home, but still not quite making the final journey back. We deployed a second lure, and it was a resounding success! Agnes is now safe and sound at home, and her family has decided she’ll be an indoor cat from now on! What a wonderful outcome!

This heartwarming reunion underscores the importance of our mission: to bring every lost pet back to where they belong.

🐾 WELCOME HOME, GUINNESS! 🐾

Meet Guinness, a handsome ginger boy from Midrand who is very much a homebody. When he didn’t come home on Thursday night, his mom was understandably terrified. Her biggest fear? The dogs up the road might have gotten to him. By Friday, she called us in to assist.

Enter Bandit! 🐕‍🦺 Our incredible tracking dog got straight to work to calm those fears. He picked up the trail and led us to a seriously dense greenbelt not too far from home. Along the way, we ran into the local bully cat! This bold feline stood his ground, staring Bandit down as if challenging him to a duel. But Bandit? He didn’t care at all and just kept working right past him, which made the bully cat rethink his life choices and duck out of the way! 😂

Deep into the thick bush, Bandit suddenly stopped dead still and gave us a proximity indication.
(For those who might not know, a proximity indication is when a tracking dog signals that the missing pet is extremely close—often by freezing, intensely focusing, or changing their body language. It tells us the pet is right there, without the dog moving in closer and risking spooking the frightened animal!)

Knowing Guinness was right there, we immediately took a pin location and pulled back. The last thing we wanted was to scare him off his safe spot. We headed back to the house and worked out a custom lure strategy for his parents to use.

His mom and dad executed the lure calmly and to absolute perfection—exactly as we instructed. And it worked! At 5:20 AM, his mom was woken up by “the most beautiful sound”… Guinness meowing as he trotted right up the stairs to their bedroom! 🧡🐈

We later received this incredibly touching message from his mom:
“You guys are God-sent. Thank you isn’t enough for what you give to fur moms and dads. I don’t have the words enough to describe how I feel right now, other than thankful, blessed and humble. Despite being a working dog mom myself, it was incredibly humbling watching Bandit work. May you, your fur kids and your business go from strength to strength. You guys are just incredible.”

🏡🐾 WELCOME HOME, MISUN! 🐾🏡

When Misun from Cedar Creek Estate didn’t come home for a few days, his family couldn’t understand why. He’s very much a family cat and disappearing without a trace was completely out of character.

Axl was called in to help and quickly got to work, tracing Misun’s movements through the estate before leading us to a drain where there was evidence that a cat had entered. When Axl gave his classic “left ear up” indication, we knew we needed to trust what he was telling us.

Rather than pushing further, we backed off and guided the family through the lure process, customising the life for Misan.

Just a few hours later, Misun limped home.

Sadly, we discovered that he had possibly been in a snare and escaped and hid in the drain, which explained why he hadn’t returned sooner. The good news is that he has received veterinary treatment and his injuries are being treated.

Welcome home, Misun. ❤️ And hope you recover soon.

🏡❤️ WELCOME HOME LEELA ❤️🏡

When little Leela, a beloved Jack Russell from Roodepoort, disappeared from her yard, her family was devastated and immediately reached out for help.

Axl got to work and followed Leela’s adventurous path through the area, taking us past several places where she had been seen. Eventually, her scent trail ended near a particular home. After speaking to the residents there, we learned that one of their pets had also supposedly gone missing on the very same day. The situation raised a few questions, but without further scent to follow, we turned our attention to making Leela impossible to ignore.

Posters were designed and placed throughout the area, shelters were checked, social media posts were shared, and the community was made aware that Leela was being actively searched for.

Then, last night, something very interesting happened.

This morning Leela’s mom told us:

“Someone put her back in our yard and when we heard the noise we found her at our back door. She’s warm and not hungry 🤷‍♀️. I’m glad she is home though.”

While we may never know exactly who returned Leela or why, the timing is difficult to ignore. Once the posters went up and the area became aware that Leela was being actively searched for, she suddenly got put back in her yard.

This is exactly why we encourage families to act quickly, get us out to narrow the search area & get visibility and get information out there. Visibility creates pressure, and pressure often brings results.

Most importantly, Leela is safe. Her best friend Ash was overjoyed to see her again, and her little humans couldn’t have been happier to welcome her back where she belongs.

We’ll be returning to the area next week to see if we can uncover a little more about what happened. But for now, we’re simply celebrating the fact that this beautiful girl is home with her family.

🐾❤️ WELCOME HOME PEACHES ❤️🐾

When young Peaches from Kyalami failed to show up for her usual cuddles, her family knew something wasn’t right. As a little creature of habit, disappearing without a trace was completely out of character for this sweet girl.

Bandit and Krypto were called in to assist and quickly got to work. The Dutch Shepherd duo led us to a nearby construction site and some old buildings where Peaches appeared to have been spending her time. However, because Peaches isn’t familiar with dogs, we knew that pushing too hard could risk sending her even further away.

Instead, we took a step back and explained our lure protocol to her family.

The timing couldn’t have been better.
Just as they finished setting up the lure, Peaches made her grand appearance and returned home safely to the people who had been missing her so much.

Her dad commented about what brought her home, “I think the dogs prob flushed her out from that place.”

Her family was absolutely overjoyed to have their girl back where she belongs.

They later sent us this message:
“You guys are fricken amazing honestly. Doing the most for us pet owners. Truly pray you guys have everything of the best and even more.”

🏡 WELCOME HOME TEDDY 🏡

When nervous little Teddy from Cornwall Hill went missing, his family tried all the right things but when he still didn’t come home, they called us in to help.

Bandit and his trainee, Krypto, searched on Friday evening and picked up Teddy’s scent in an unexpected area of the school grounds that is currently under construction. We sent one of Teddy’s moms in to quietly talk to him while we checked his usual hangouts, with a plan to continue reminding him that he was safe, loved, and missed.

A few hours later, Teddy made the best decision possible and came home! We suspect that seeing two Dutch Shepherds around was far more concerning to him than the new black cat in the area. Little does Teddy know that Bandit is actually a huge cat lover!

His mom, Heidi, sent us this message:

❤️ “Thanks so much for your help.....you guys are amazing ❤️”

We are thrilled that Teddy is safely back where he belongs, enjoying plenty of cuddles and being thoroughly grounded by his family.

Six years ago, Healthy Hound started with two dogs, a passion for Search & Rescue, and a dream to help where we could. What began as volunteer work slowly grew into something far bigger than we ever imagined — becoming the first company in Africa dedicated to searching for missing pets.

From Zizou and Axl to the incredible team of dogs we have today, every step of this journey has been built on trust, training, hard work, and a love for both animals and people. Each dog brings their own unique skill set to the team, and every single one continues to train regularly to stay sharp and ready for the next call.

It hasn’t always been easy. There have been exhausting days, heartbreaking cases, challenges behind the scenes, and moments where the road ahead felt uncertain. But through it all, the reward has always been knowing that we are making a difference — reuniting families, helping animals, and growing a team with purpose.

As we move into year 7, we are incredibly excited for what lies ahead. From expanding into conservation tracking to building a brand new home for both the dogs and humans, this next chapter feels incredibly special.

To everyone who has trusted us, supported us, followed our journey, shared our posts, trained with us, or stood beside us over the last six years — thank you. Healthy Hound would not exist without this community.

🐾 WELCOME HOME ODDY 🐾

This fluffy Siberian boy is officially home safe again! Oddy is a bit of a repeat offender and we previously helped find him late last year too.

When his dad Kevin contacted us this time, we suggested doing a walk and talk — and Kevin absolutely nailed it. Calmness was the key here. Oddy had been very upset after Kevin had been overseas and clearly needed reassurance that dad was finally home and that it was safe to come back too.

By staying calm, patient and consistent, Kevin helped guide Oddy safely home where he belongs. 💛

🏡 WELCOME HOME BACON 🖤🐾
📍 Benoni

When Bacon didn’t come home, his mom reached out to us for help. Before jumping straight into a search, we guided them through our walk and talk process and asked them to try that first before spending money on a full search.

While doing the walk and talk, they suddenly heard a meow coming from a drain… and there was Bacon! Safe, stuck, and very ready to go home. 🥹

This one was a perfect reminder that calmness is everything. Panicking can easily cause a scared cat to stay hidden, but staying calm gave Bacon the confidence to respond and helped his family hear him.

Here’s the message we received from his mom afterwards:

“Your willingness to help before we signed any contracts speaks volumes on your passion for animals, thanks so much 😁😸”

Happy 7th Birthday to our incredible girl, Zizou 🎉🐾

From anti-poaching dog, to the first dog in Africa trained to search for missing pets, Zizou has become our “do it all” dog. She searches for vapes and fi****ms (for fun), training toward her PSA PDC, and doing mantrailing too — because one job is never enough for her 😅

But beyond the work, she is the heart of our pack. From beginning days where she preferred to sleep outside or in the car, to now sleeping curled up in my arms every night, she has become my absolute best friend ❤️

Our boss dog. Our chaos coordinator. Our ball chaser. Our once-in-a-lifetime girl. Our Zoo Biscuit, our Zoo Dog, our baby girl… Happy Birthday, Zizou 🖤🐕
