02 | THE LAZY HORSE

THE CONCERN
"My horse feels lazy and lacks energy.
He's flat under saddle, reluctant to go forward or seems to run out of steam
sooner than expected."

THE MISCONCEPTION
Increasing his feed will give him more energy and make him
perform better
A horse lacking "energy" naturally makes us think he needs more dietary energy.

THE FACT
Calories in the bucket and the energy we feel underneath us aren't necessarily the same thing.
A horse can consume adequate dietary energy and still perform poorly because of inadequate fitness, fatigue, dehydration, heat, insufficient recovery, pain or an underlying health issue.
Before increasing the ration, ask: Why is my horse lacking energy?
Consider whether his fitness matches his workload.
Look at body condition, hydration, recovery and soundness. Has his workload recently increased?
Has his willingness to work changed suddenly?
If he is genuinely under-fuelled, additional dietary energy may be appropriate.
However, more feed cannot manufacture fitness or correct discomfort.

01 | LOSS OF CONDITION

THE CONCERN
“My horse is losing condition.”
He's looking lighter, his ribs are becoming more noticeable, or he simply isn't carrying the condition he once did.

THE MISCONCEPTION
Increasing the protein in his diet will help him gain condition.
Protein is closely associated with muscle, growth and development, so moving to a higher-protein feed can seem like the obvious solution when a horse starts looking light.

THE FACT
Body condition is primarily an energy consideration, not simply a protein one.
Protein provides the amino acids required for the growth, maintenance and repair of body tissues, including muscle. But increasing protein alone doesn't necessarily provide the additional usable energy required for weight gain.
The more useful question is: Why is my horse losing condition?
Look at total energy intake, forage quantity and quality, grazing, workload and actual feed intake. Consider dental health, parasite management, stress, competition for food and general health.
If his energy requirements have increased beyond what his current diet provides, then the ration may need to change.
Find out why condition is being lost before deciding what needs to be added.

🐴 Condition loss isn't always a feed problem.

When a horse starts losing weight or topline, our first instinct is often to increase the feed. 🌾 But what if the real issue isn't nutrition?

Pain from poor saddle fit, dental problems 🦷, joint discomfort 🦵, muscle soreness or other underlying issues can prevent a horse from using nutrients effectively. Instead of building muscle and maintaining condition 💪, the body shifts its focus to managing stress and protecting itself.

🌾 Feed is essential—but it can't fix what pain is preventing. If your horse is eating well but still losing condition, it's worth looking beyond the feed bin. 🔍 Addressing the underlying cause is often the key to restoring healthy weight, muscle and performance. 🐎✨

🍯 The Sweet Truth about Sugar 🍃

When people think about sugar in a horse’s diet, molasses is often the first thing blamed. But is it really the biggest contributor?

The truth is, most of the sugar your horse consumes doesn’t come from the feed bag—it comes from forage. Grass and hay naturally contain sugars that fluctuate throughout the day, the seasons, and even the weather.
That doesn’t mean molasses-free feeds don’t have their place. For horses needing tighter dietary control, they can offer greater consistency and precision. But for many horses, it’s about understanding the whole diet, not focusing on one ingredient.

The goal isn’t to eliminate sugar completely—because that’s simply not possible. The goal is to understand where it comes from and manage it appropriately.
