Today, September 28th is world rabies day. This however does not mean that rabies is only noted on one day per year. We vaccinate dogs and cats whenever the opportunity arises - at our sterilisation clinics, at rural outreach campaigns and at Midmar Vet Clinic. Rural outreach campaigns are not just about Rabies vaccinations, they are about animal welfare and education. On Wednesday 23 September our team with Debbie and Darren went to Emafakathini with a team from Funda Nenja. Approximatly 110 dogs and about 20 cats were vaccinated. Many puppies and kittens were presented for vaccination - these were too young, so they were examined and dewormed by Dr Lee. Owners were spoken to about sterilising their animals, and options given to the owners as to how to go about reaching out for assistance. There were a few injured dogs, and dogs with mange that were treated by Dr Lee. A horse with terrible saddle sores was also examined and treated.

❓What must I do if a person was exposed to a rabid animal?

Rabies is a deadly disease with NO cure once symptoms are seen - BUT, it is 100% preventable with the correct knowledge. This virus can be transmitted to people by an infected animal’s bite, scratch, or lick. Just one drop of blood from a wound requires full rabies prevention.

If a person is bitten, scratched or licked by an animal suspected to have rabies (an unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated animal showing odd behaviour or neurological symptoms), the person needs to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for 10-15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately.

Post-exposure prophylaxis treatment will involve a series of rabies vaccinations, and if necessary rabies immunoglobulin being injected into the wound if the skin has been broken.

While rabies is 99,9% fatal once a person or animal shows clinical signs, it is also 100% preventable.

Happy Heritage Day!

I found a few interesting facts about the heritage of dogs in South Africa.

The canine heritage of South Africa is a captivating story of natural survival, ancient migrations, and rugged resilience.
From primitive survivalists that trotted alongside Iron Age pastoralists to powerful homestead protectors bred to face the wilderness, South Africa’s dogs are deeply woven into the country's historical fabric.
The history of dogs in South Africa is anchored by three legendary, distinctly homegrown breeds:

* The Background: Tracing its unbroken lineage back more than 7,000 years, the Africanis migrated south with Iron Age Bantu-speaking pastoralists around 300–600 AD.
* The Vibe: This is an aboriginal landrace, meaning it was sculpted entirely by natural selection rather than artificial human breeding standards. Centuries of roaming the sunny bushveld selected for extreme energy efficiency, natural parasite tolerance, and incredible heat hardiness.
* The Legacy: Known locally by many names (including the Kasi dog or Zulu dog) it is celebrated as a completely healthy, highly intelligent, and structurally perfect masterpiece of nature.

* The Background: When European settlers arrived, they crossed their own hounds with the indigenous, ridge-backed hunting dogs kept by the local Khoekhoe people.
* The Vibe: Fierce, fast, and famously athletic, these dogs were specifically developed to track and corner lions in the African bush, keeping the predators at bay until hunters arrived.
* The Legacy: Recognised for the trademark "ridge" of hair growing backwards down its spine, the Ridgeback stands as a symbol of local resourcefulness and cross-cultural canine evolution.

* The Background: Developed by South African farmers (Boers) to defend remote homesteads from apex predators like leopards, hyenas, and baboons. Its genetic melting pot includes European mastiffs, bulldogs, and ancient local types brought to the region over centuries.
* The Vibe: A massive, physically imposing powerhouse. Despite their formidable guarding instinct and immense strength, they are legendary for their profound gentleness and intense loyalty toward their human families.

No story of South African dog heritage is complete without Just Nuisance a massive Great Dane who lived in Simon's Town during the 1930s and 40s. He is the only dog in history to be officially enlisted in the Royal Navy. Known for escorting sailors on trains and helping them find their way back to HMS Afrikander, he remains an enduring local legend with his own bronze statue overlooking the harbor.

Thank you to for inviting us back. This time for a steri clinic in the community surrounding Nambiti Game Reserve. We were treated to a beautiful game drive in the reserve on the day we arrived and we were put up in the camp for the 2 nights we were there for. We then spent a full day doing steri's and rabies vaccinations while the vet nurse students and their tutors from Wales got to see how a steri outreach clinic works as well as get involved in doing the rabies vaccinations.

10 dogs and 2 cats were sterilised as well as a dog with an open wound which was stitched up, and a dog with a mammory tumor who had the lump removed. Over 65 dogs were vaccinated against rabies. Thank you to Dr Lee for always being prepared to share her expertise with students and newly qualified vets.

On this International Dog day, what better way to acknowledge and celebrate dogs than to do a welfare steri clinic.

Thank you Shabnam from Stray Paws South Africa for all the love and care you show the dogs especially in poorer communities. We spent the day in Welbedacht where 15 dogs were given a better, healthier future with no more puppies. Our last dog came with her 6 week old puppies who were vaccinated and then got to enjoy a quick feed while Mum was resting, what a relief for her not to have any more puppies.

We have had a bit of a break in welfare steri clinics over the last month, but are heading back into a busy period starting off with our monthly clinic held yesterday, where a whopping 22 dogs were sterilised!

Everything ran smoothly with no hiccups and all dogs went home with a bag of dog food. Thanks as usual to all the Funda Nenja staff and volunteers and to Dr Lee and her team for another successful clinic.
